Galaxy: The Dynamic Duo?

MLS 1 May 2009 | 1 Comment

The Galaxy keep getting bailed out, plain and simple.  The late game heroics aren’t always going to be there.  The last ditch goals are going to end at some point.

Five games into the season with only four points to show of it?  That isn’t the start we wanted as Galaxy fans.  It is, however, the start we have become accustomed to.

In an exercise in patience I am going to set a low bar for this weekend’s goals.  Tomorrow’s game versus New York is a winnable game for LA.  However, I don’t want to scare off my team by setting such lofty expectations.  Instead let’s focus on one small thing.  Let’s not trail in this game.  Let’s not dig a hole.

Far too often in this still early season LA has been in a position to have to salvage games.  This ain’t Sanford and Son, we shouldn’t be in the salvage business.  We are the Galaxy for God’s sake, we were always in the domination business, like The Sopranos.  But this is a new era, so we need to concentrate on making baby steps.  Just don’t fall behind.

The honest truth is that LA has actually been improving the last few weeks.  The score line may not show it, but our defensive shape has been much better.  Aside from the first 25 minutes of the second half last week in Colorado, the Galaxy played a good game.  The Berhalter-Gonzales combination in the center looks like it is one that could work and the injection of Todd Dunivant seems to have settled the left side.  If for two weeks in a row Bruce Arena can trot out the same back line, we may actually see a bit of gelling go on.  Consistency breeds results, but consistency is not something the Galaxy have had the luxury of so far this season.  That changes this week.

Not only will we finally get to see the same four defenders two weeks in a row, but we may finally see our proper robinstriker pairing of Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle.  The Dynamic Duo that lit the league on fire last year has been missing it’s Robin.  Well, he is strapping back on his utility belt and not a moment too soon.  Alan Gordon’s complete inability to use his feet has cost us points.

One final thing I want to address.  Where the heck are they hiding the real Eddie Lewis?  Five games in and I can’t recall one dangerous ball into the box.  This is the man the served one of the best balls I’ve ever seen onto Landon Donovan’s head against Mexico in 2002.  I know as a player ages many things are lost, but your service of the ball is not necessarily supposed to be one of them.  Quickness?  Yes.  Fitness? Yes. Hair line? Yes.  Ball Service? No.

This is the man once heralded by Leeds fans as the American Beckham.  Eddie the Eagle!  Show me a glimpse of that guy.  That’s the player I still believe in. Not the dude that has been spraying balls out of bounds on the left side of midfield so far this season.  Come on Eddie, switch to Bubbalicious or something, cuz the gum you are smacking on during every game is obviously stealing all your flavor.
