Bundesliga: Our Teams In The Europa League

Bundesliga, Europe 23 October 2009 | 0 Comments

Germany’s Europa League teams turned out to give us a very little bit of what was wanted this week.  With the way the German teams are playing this year – there was a bit of heartbreak, and a lot of disappointment as well.

Let’s start on the brighter side with Hamburg SV (HSV – Bundesliga #2) up against Glasgow Celtic (Celtic FC):

HSV returned home with a very well deserved 3 points in the competition.  The first half was well-fought by both sides with Celtic’s Brown nearly dashing our dreams in just the 12th minute.  Thankfully, the shot was wide, and the game continued on 0-0.  Hamburg began to dominate until the 63rd minute when Marcus Berg produced an incredible shot to earn HSV a hard-fought 3 points.

Attendance in Glasgow: 45,000

The game that promised the most today, gave us a 2-2 draw between Werder Bremen (Bundesliga #4) and Austria Vienna.  The game was pretty lackluster until the 19th minute when Claudio Pizzaro woke the sleeping crowd with a goal in the 19th minute.  The game continued with nothing much to talk about until again in the 63rd minute when Pizzaro again woke the crowd up to find Werder leading 2-0.  Nothing that good can last forever, as we have come to discover all too frequently this year.

With the crowd now paying attention, they got to see Werder’s hopes dashed when Sulimani brought Austria Vienna within reaching distance with a goal in the 73rd, and their substitute Thiago Schumacher equalizing the game in the 87th.

Sleeping Attendance: 11,000

What does this mean for the weekend when Germany goes back to the Bundesliga?

HSV will try to build on their Europa League win as they take on Schalke 04 in a match that could literally go either way.  If HSV is successful in their quest, could we see a new #1 by Sunday?

Werder Bremen will try to give the fans what they want to see, namely a well-deserved 3 points, when they take on 16th place Bochum.

Lots of games are scheduled this weekend that could see a change at both the top and the bottom of the table.  My pick for Game of the weekend: Bayer 04 taking on Borussia Dortmund.  Does Bayer have what it takes to hold on to a very slim lead?  We will find out!

About Joshywa Schrader

I may not be your typical "soccer writer," but it's a love I have had since I can first remember seeing any sport as a child. I have a variety of favourite teams scattered throughout the leagues, and the teams I cover in the Bundesliga barely make a dent in all of the teams I love to watch and support. I love the German Bundesliga due to a sense of heritage, and simply due to the fact that I think the league has some of the most impressive players to watch.
