Bundesliga: Winter Transfer Wrap-Up
The Winter Transfer Window recently ended in Germany, and I would like to highlight transfers for each club. Some of the signings were big surprises, and others we have seen coming for awhile. The Bundesliga Transfer Window was an very exciting one, and this just shows a piece of the action.
Broken Down by Team:
Bayer Leverkusen – Currently 1st Place
The transfer window was quiet for Bayer Leverkusen. They only had one player return, only to be loaned out again to another team. Here is what they did.
Coming: Bastian Oczipka (returning from a loan spell with Hansa Rostock)
Going: Bastian Oczipka (Loan – FC St. Pauli), Pierre de Wit (To – 1. FC Kaiserslautern), Richard Sukuta-Pasu (Loan – FC St. Pauli), Theofanis Gekas (Loan – Hertha BSC), Assimou Touré (To – Arminia Bielefeld)
FC Bayern München – Currently 2nd Place
Bayern looks pretty confident in their current team as they push forward and continue struggling with Bayer Leverkusen for 1st Place.
Coming: – Nobody!
Going: Luca Toni (Loan – AS Roma), Breno (Loan – 1. FC Nürnberg), Andreas Ottl (Loan – 1. FC Nürnberg), Alexander Baumjohann (To – FC Schalke 04), Edson Braafheid (Loan – Celtic)
FC Schalke 04 – Currently 3rd Place
FC Schalke had a very productive transfer window. They picked up some big names, and although they also lost a few big names, it looks as though this could help them maintain their Champions League Quest. It should prove to be a very strong side for the remainder of the Season.
Coming: Alexander Baumjohann (From – FC Bayern München), Edu (From – Suwon Blue Wings), Bogdan Müller (From – SpVgg Neckarelz), Tore Reginiussen (From – Tromsö IL), Peer Kluge (From – 1. FC Nürnberg), Tim Hoogland (From – 1. FSV Mainz transfer will not be completed until the end of the season), Besart Ibraimi (From – Renova Cepciste), Junmin Hao (From – Tianjin Teda FC), Mario Gavranovic (From – Neuchatel Xamax)
Going: Lubos Hanzel (Released from squad), Levan Kobiashvili (To- Hertha BSC), Halil Altintop (To – Eintracht Frankfurt), Marvin Pourie (Loan – TuS Koblenz), Lewis Holtby (Loan – VfL Bochum)
Borussia Dortmund – Currently 4th Place
Dortmund looks prepared to stand on their own two feet and push through the rest of the season without a single transfer. Nobody coming in, and nobody going out. Is this Confidence, or Over-Confidence? We shall see at the end of the season.
Coming: – Nobody!
Going: – Nobody!
Hamburger SV – Currently 5th Place
With perhaps the most shocking of the Winter Transfers, Hamburger SV pulled off a coup on the English Premier League with their nig name nigning. Ruud van Nistelrooy was rumored to be going to any of three separate teams in the EPL, but instead settled on a lesser contract and a move to the Bundesliga!
Coming: Ruud van Nistelrooy (From – Real Madrid)
Going: Mickael Tavares (Loan – 1. FC Nürnberg), Alex Silva (Loan – FC Sao Paulo)
Werder Bremen – Currently 6th Place
Werder Bremen had a very quiet Transfer Window as well. No real big names came in or got sent packing, although there were a couple of bargain pick-ups for the team.
Coming: Aymen Abdennour (Loan – Etoile Sportive du Sahen/TUN), Sandro Wagner (From – MSV Duisburg)
Going: Torsten Oehrl (Loan – Fortuna Düsseldorf), Dusko Tosic (Loan – MSV Duisburg), Kevin Schindler (Loan – MSV Duisburg), Jurica Vranjes (Loan – Genclerbirligi)
Eintracht Frankfurt – Currently 7th Place
Frankfurt had a very exciting Transfer Window! Not only did they bring in an MLS Player, but they made a nice pick-up from FC Schalke 04.
Coming: Ricardo Clark (From – Houston Dynamo), Halil Altintop (From – FC Shalke 04)
Going: Markus Steinhöfer (Loan – 1. FC Kaiserslautern), Mehdi Mahdavikia (To – Asin Steel Tehran)
1. FSV Mainz 05 – Currently 8th Place
The Transfer Window for Mainz looked to be a bit of confusion about who, what, where, when, and why. This could end up being a completely different team within just a few weeks time.
Coming: – Adam Szalai (From – Real Madrid), Fabian Götze (From – Borussia Dortmund II), Jan Simak (From – VfB Stuttgart), Jared Jeffrey (From – FC Brugge), Malik Fathi (Loan From – Spartak Moscow)
Going: - Srdjan Baljak (To – MSV Duisburg), Tim Hoogland (To – FC Schalke 04 transfer will not be completed until the end of the season), Daniel Gunkel (To – TuS Koblenz), Peter van der Heyden (To – Club Brugge), Milorad Pekovic (To – SpVgg Greuther Fürth)
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim – Currently 9th Place
Not much to speak about with Hoffenheim. Perhaps this is the Ultimate 1899 Squad for now.
Coming: – Nobody!
Going: Ramazan Özcan (Loan – Besiktas Istanbul)
VfB Stuttgart – Currently 10th Place
Stuttgart has had an up and down year, and fans have been waiting for the Transfer Window to hope that it would help stabilize the team. They did try nicely, but I think they may have placed too much hope on their incoming players. Letting go of Thomas Hitzlsperger may prove to be more damaging than they think.
Coming: Cristian Molinaro (Loan From – Juventus), Christian Gentner (From – VfL Wolfsburg transfer will not be completed until the end of the season)
Going: Ludovic Magnin (To – FC Zürich), Thomas Hitzlsperger (To – Lazio), Yildiray Basturk (To – Blackburn Rovers), Jan Simak (To – 1. FSV Mainz 05), Elson (Loan – Hannover 96)
VfL Wolfsburg – Currently 11th Place
Wolfsburg has been struggling for most of the season, and they have been nothing like their teams of old. This Transfer Window looked more like a Salary Dump than a strategic plan.
Coming: Rever (From – Gremio Porto Alegre)
Going: Christian Gentner (To – VfB Stuttgart transfer will not be completed until the end of the season), Daniel Baier (To – FC Augsburg), Rodrigo Alvim (Contract Cancelled/Released), Vlad Munteanu (Loan – FSV Frankfurt), Ricardo Costa (To – OSC Lille)
Borussia Mönchengladbach – Currently 12th Place
From a team with perhaps the longest name in World Football, I would have expected more over the Winter Transfer Window. Steady as she goes as they say!
Coming: – Nobody!
Going: Steve Gohouri (Contract Cancelled/Released)
1. FC Köln – Currently 13th Place
Cologne had a relatively quiet Transfer Window, but the moves they did make seemed to be very strategic. They made moves that could stand to shock everyone.
Coming: Zoran Tosic (From – Manchester United)
Going: Wilfried Sanou (Loan – Uruwa Red Diamonds), Lukas Nottbeck (To – Borussia Dortmund II), Michael Gardawski (Loan – FC Carl Zeiss Jena), Marvin Matip (Loan – Karlsruher SC)
VfL Bochum – Currently 14th Place
Bochum stayed pretty quiet during the Transfer Window, and although they did make a few strategic transfers, it was nothing to write home about.
Coming: Milos Maric (From – KAA Gent), Lewis Holtby (Loan From – FC Schalke 04)
Going: Shinji Ono (To – Shimzu S-Pulse), Daniel Imhof (To – FC St. Gallen), Daniel Fernandes (Loan – Iraklis Saloniki)
SC Freiburg – Currently 15th Place
Looking to avoid relegation, Freiburg made some surprising moves they think will help them avoid relegation this year. We can only wait and see.
Coming: Hamed Namouchi (From – Nobody, Currently Unattached – most recently with FC Lorient), Papiss Cissé (From – FC Metz)
Going: Alain Junior Ollé Ollé (Loan – Rot Weiss Ahlen), Eke Uzoma (Loan – 1860 München), Andreas Glockner (Loan – TuS Koblenz)
Hannover 96 – Currently 16th Place
It’s been a rough year for Hannover, from the loss of Robert Enke, to struggling through the Bundesliga Season. Hopefully, this Transfer Window will change their fortunes.
Coming: Uwe Gospodarek (From – Nobody, Currently Unattached), Jan Durica (Loan From – Lokomotiv Moscow), Arouna Kone (Loan From – FC Sevilla), Elson (Loan From – VfB Stuttgart)
Going: – Chavdar Yankov (To – Metallurg Donetsk)
1. FC Nürnberg – Currently 17th Place
Although tying to be strategic about the transfers and find a way to keep themselves from relegation, I think Nürnberg may have ended up on the losing side of this Transfer Window.
Coming: Breno (Loan From – FC Bayern München), Andreas Ottl (Loan From – FC Bayern München), Mickael Tavares (Loan From – Hamburger SV)
Going: Peer Kluge (To – FC Schalke 04), Matthew Spiranovic (Loan To – Uruwa Red Diamonds), Dario Vidosic (Loan To – MSV Duisburg)
Hertha BSC – Currently 18th Place
Although sitting in last place, almost sure of relegation at this point, Hertha Berlin made some moves that may just prove to shock fans around the world. Who knows, maybe they can pull off a miracle?
Coming: Theofanis Gekas (Loan From – Bayer 04 Leverkusen), Levan Kobiashvili (From – FC Schalke 04), Roman Hubnik (Loan From – FK Moskau)
Going: Bryan Arguez (Contract Cancelled/Released), Kaka (To – Omonia Nicosia), Cesar (To – Al-Ahli)
Although this is a comprehensive breakdown, some things may have changed as loose ends tend to make things happen that nobody expects.
