Fabio Capello will not be leaving the England national team after the FA gave the Italian their full backing, despite a very underwhelming World Cup for the Three Lions.
After Germany sent England packing with a comprehensive 4-1 victory in the Round of 16, there were reports that Capello might find himself relieved of his duty. The FA reportedly wanted to take two weeks to make the decision, but apparently they didn’t need that much time as Club England chairman Sir Dave Richards today confirmed that Capello would be staying on.
“We remain convinced that Fabio is the best man for the job,” Richards said.
Capello has come under heavy criticism for his tactical decisions, most notably leaving out Joe Cole and playing Steven Gerrard together with Frank Lampard in midfield. However, he has hinted that the team will be injected with new players for the Euro 2012 qualification campaign. Germany perhaps served as an example to Capello – several of the starters who picked England apart last weekend started in the UEFA Under-21 Championship final against England last year, including Mesut Ozil, Manuel Neuer, and Sami Khedira. The result was very similar to the World Cup clash, as the U-21 Germans cruised to a comprehensive 4-0 victory.
“I am extremely proud to be the England manager, it means so much to me, and I am determined to succeed,” Capello said today.
For most England supporters, talk is cheap. With that disastrous performance at the World Cup, he’ll have to prove that point with results.
