Kris Boyd is indeed coming to America, but instead of Houston he’ll be playing in the Pacific Northwest for the Portland Timbers. The club made the official announcement today that one of Scotland’s most prolific goal scorers has agreed to a designated player contract.
It’s an important addition for the Timbers who traded Kenny Cooper to the New York Red Bulls before the SuperDraft in early January.
“I’ve said from the beginning, that we are committed to winning and will the make a significant investment on the player front if it is the right fit for the organization,” said Timbers Owner and President Merritt Paulson said an official release. “Kris perfectly fits the profile of the team’s needs and will make a huge impact.”
Boyd scored 164 goals in 296 appearances with Kilmarnock and Rangers of the Scottish Premier League. He won the SPL’s goal-scoring title four times and has 18 caps with the Scottish National Team. Boyd was the top scorer for Rangers in all five season with the club, breaking the 20 goal mark three times. He competed in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League and was most recently with Eskişehirspor of the Turkish Süper Lig during the 2011-12 season.
He will join the Timbers as soon as he receives his P-1 Visa and completes a physical.
