It’s too often that people shopping for a new pair of soccer cleats go based on something that they heard was good or looked good without even giving the alternatives a look.

This will be a new series on 10 Shirt just because one post would simply be too lengthy. And with that, we’re off to the first segment: Uppers!

There are really two kinds of uppers with variations in each kind as you go down a level. Neither one is necessarily better than the other, it really is all about preference.

There are three major types of leather, each with their advantages and disadvantages.

First, full-grain leather: This will be the least expensive option and tends to be the most durable of the leathers. The leather will stretch a bit and breathe a little bit. The downside with full-grain is that it doesn’t stretch too much. When you buy a boot with this leather, expect it to soften up a little bit, but size wise, it will feel largely the same.

Calfskin: The middle of the range. Calfskin will stretch and breathe more than full-grain leather but will also be a little less durable. The durability factor comes in because the leather tends to be a little softer and thinner.

Kangaroo : The leather that will stretch and breathe the most but will tend to be the least durable. They also require a bit of maintenance. Not taking care of the shoe will quickly decrease the lifespan of the boot.  The kangaroo is the thinnest and softest of the leathers as well as, in this writer’s opinion, the most comfortable. Most of the high-end leather boots will be made of this material (your Adidas Adipures and Nike K-Leather Lasers and Legends). When purchasing a kangaroo leather cleat, you want the fit to be snug all around your foot as the leather does stretch anywhere from half a size to a full size based on the type of shoe and the kangaroo it came from.

There are options as well. The Adidas Predator X is made of engineered calfskin while Kelme famously experimented with sharkskins.

Onto the synthetics:

Synthetic shoes tend to be the most durable due to their inability to stretch to the foot. That being said, once you start getting into the very high end synthetics (your Vapors and synthetic Lasers) the durability tends to go way down due to the synthetics becoming much thinner and lighter. The main thing to know about synthetics is that the way that they feel when you first purchase the shoe is essentially the way that they will feel throughout the life of the shoe.

Newer high end synthetics from Adidas and Nike do have the ability to stretch though. The Adidas Sprintskin and Kanga Lite from Nike utilize the heat from your foot to mold the synthetic to the shape of your foot.

Dying a leather can wreak havoc with the quality and feel. One thing that I’ve noticed is that different colors of the same exact boot can fit and feel differently simply due to the color of the shoe. Some colors will be softer than others. This is why you tend to find many of the really bright colors on synthetic shoes.

Since the dawning of the Premier League in England, football kits have taken on a new significance both culturally and economically. The increasing emphasis on the commercial aspects of the game has meant that the unveiling of a new kit has become a significant summer event and the proceeds of the kit sales are a vital income stream, especially now in the ever uncertain financial climate. Therefore creating a kit that has mass appeal is crucial.

However, despite all of the preparation and planning every year there are kits which most football fans can instantly recognise as being ‘relegation kits’. A kit so horrifyingly bad that no-one can visualise that team being even vaguely successful. There are many such kits every season and they generally tend to come from a select band of mid to lower table clubs. You would never catch the ‘bigger’ EPL teams sporting a relegation kit; they have bigger fan-bases and advertisers to keep happy. Therefore they generally keep their kits relatively simple and a bit more high brow. Take Arsenal’s ‘invincible’ season for example, would they have lasted an entire season un-defeated if they had trotted out at Highbury wearing a gaudy, off colour, nylon kit made by Bukta? Would Manchester United splash ‘Dave’s Online Betting’ across their chests? The answer to these questions is a resounding no.

Now when it comes to this season’s relegation kits we have three very obvious contenders. Firstly there is Wigan Athletic; Wigan’s kit probably seemed like a good idea on paper but it just screams relegation fodder. Manager Roberto Martinez claims that is ‘a kit worthy of Wigan Athletic’, on reflection, if I were a Wigan supporter I don’t think I would be too pleased with that assessment. The new home shirt is caught betwixt and between the traditional blue shirts of yesteryear and the more contemporary blue and white striped affair that Wigan have sported. One solitary stripe down the left hand side of the jersey gives it the appearance of every Sunday league shirt you’ve ever seen. Couple the small time design of the top with an enormous and garish sponsor’s logo and suddenly you are heading for the Premier League trap-door. Which is something Wigan have been flirting with for a few years, this kit might just kick them through it.

Equally my own Birmingham City have a new kit design that, I honestly believe is the worst kit in the history of the club. Now, when you consider some of the strips we have had previously, this is no mean feat. The club’s new Chinese owners gave the fans four choices on which they could vote, the option chosen by the supporters appeared to have only been there to make up the numbers. It appears to be an amalgamation of around seven or eight different kits that they manufacturers proposed simply because they needed to provide a fourth option. It wasn’t supposed to win. For the record I went for the ‘just a blue shirt please’ option, to no avail. Can I visualise Birmingham winning handsomely in the elected kit? I think we can all guess the answer to that one.

Last but by no means least we have Bolton Wanderers. Bolton have come in for a fair amount of rather well deserved criticism for their recent kit choices, last years ‘effort’ resplendent with its oversized, pocketed, bottom half diamond/barcode design really was a sight to behold. For the 2010-2011 season Bolton and Reebok have maintained their fabulous streak of just awful kits. The fact that the club shares the same sponsor as Wigan is bad enough, however the scale by which it dwarves the Bolton crest is appalling. Teamed with vast maker’s badges on the shoulders of the shirt, Bolton’s new jersey appears to have been based on template from 1997.

So if you are unlucky enough to own one of the three aforementioned shirts I would get some Premier League badges printed onto it as soon as possible, after all, it could be a while before you get to do it again.

I’m not even sure where to begin on this new found hatred on a player that used to be in my “Top 5 Favorite Soccer Twitterers.” I thought he had grown a lot since last season. I thought he was gaining a tad bit more control and really starting to mature as a player. With him being only twenty, I wished him nothing but success in the future. Well Daniel Arthur Quimby Cruz, I fear you’ve reached my bad side. I am not one to usually hold grudges, however, you’ve left me with no choice.

Let’s share a little story shall we: Last December I became Danny’s 1000th Twitter follower. He stated his 1000th Twitter follower would receive a game day jersey. I let it slide past February because of the holidays and the off season and waited. I brought it up again in March and he said, “Oh yea, I’ve been busy just DM your address one more time” I did. It is now August–still haven’t gotten that jersey buddy. I suggested via Twitter that he could just bring an extra to Seattle to give to me. He said “yup, you won’t get the one I wear in Seattle, but you’ll get one I’ve worn in past games” Did I get one? Nah. Why? Probably because I forgot he is a child and is a sore loser. Things happen my dear friends, I understand this. However, Danny Cruz you have officially made my shit list from here on out.

Oh, and don’t bother saying that I’m whining. Or even go the whole, “why do you even care you are a Sounders supporter.” I don’t wanna hear it. I won that jersey fair and square.

“The Uruguay Guy’ is of course Uruguayan international Alvaro Fernandez who recently signed as a Designated Player with Seattle(a transfer WSR had the pleasure of breaking). Fernandez, at 24 years old, is arguably the league’s most important designated player signing to date, a major shift from the traditional aging stars that have been signed as DP’s. So there’s no reason to know who he is.
