With a full slate of games on display this weekend, the boys of Serie A surely did not disappoint. We now find the race for the Scudetto between just two teams, while possibly a bit of clarity in the push for 4th place and the final Champions League slot. So without further ado, here’s your review of the action you truly should not have missed.

The Derby d’Italia

The first game of the week also happened to have the greatest billing: an Inter Milan side struggling of late, finding themselves in second place and a point shy of AS Roma, versus a Juventus side that, to put it bluntly, has been disasterous all year long. But that was still Inter-Juve, and no matter what the standings scream, the derby is always chock full of drama. Unfortunately for the Bianconeri, most of said drama was washed away in the 37th minute as Mohamed Sissoko saw a second yellow for a late challenge on Javier Zanetti. It was a shame in a game of this magnitude, as Juve had gotten off to a quick start challenging Inter’s goal within the first minute. Fighting admirably, it took a 75th minute stroke of genius from Maicon of Inter to settle the deadlock. What will end up being the goal of the year perhaps, I’m finding it difficult to put into words as stunning this strike truly was….Maicon controlling a soft clearance with his foot, then knee, past a Juve defender, one more juggling touch and then a volley from 25 yards or so that left Buffon grasping at air. Simply stunning. Samuel Eto’o put the game away in stoppage time with his 12th domestic goal of the year, as well as seriously damning any chance Juventus has of finishing in 4th. They now sit in 7th place, 6 points behind a resurgent Sampdoria side, one that stole full points from AC Milan with a last gasp goal at the death.

AC’s Title Chances Blanked

It’s been an up and down season for numerous teams (see: Juventus), but Milan heading into this weekend still found themselves only 4 points off league leaders Roma. While even the most optimistic of fans would concede Milan’s title hopes were slim at best, at least they were still firmly found in the conversation. Well, that was the case until Sunday night. Against the run of play in the 20th minute, Marco Boriello put the away side ahead, giving Milan a lead they would characteristically squander in the 54th with a penalty strike from the in-form Antonio Cassano. Things seemed to briefly settle, as both sides saw plenty of ball movement. However, stoppage time can be a tricky friend and it was then that Sampdoria stole 3 points as Giampaolo Pazzini headed in the winner in the 92nd minute, crushing any hopes Milan had of a push to the league title. It seems somewhat fitting, with Milan’s inconsistent and streaky play this that they would bow out of the race with a few games to play, but honestly not many fans realistically saw them being this close to the top at the start of the season. Hats off to Leonardo (if he stays) for at least bringing some excitement to the storied club, and with four games left they can sleep well knowing third place is basically a lock.

Roma Stay Top

Following Inter’s victory over Juventus Friday, the pressure was firmly squared upon Roma in their culminating derby. Lazio, finding themselves a few points clear of the relegation zone needed points, and playing against their city rivals seemed to be enough motivation itself at that start. In just 14 minutes, the visitors found the back of the net courtesy of Tommaso Rocchi in front of an often hostile Stadio Olympico crowd. While shots were heavily favored by Lazio, it was Roma that was slight victor of ball possesion and play, seemingly choosing to find their openings instead of a full on assault. The visitors had a golden chance to truly make things interesting early in the second with a penalty, but Sergio Floccari’s spot kick was saved by the solid Julio Sergio. Fates were perhaps sealed in the 53rd as Mirko Vucinic finished what Floccari could not, tying the match but also swaying momentum. Only a few minutes later Vucinic was again the spoiler as he struck a sublime free kick shortly after the hour mark to ensure Roma’s ascension back to the top of the table.

In other action: Atalanta 2 – Fiorentina 1, Parma 2 – Genoa 3, Bari 1 – Napoli 2, Cagliari 2 – Palermo 2, Udinese 1 – Bologna 1, and Catania 2 – Siena 2.

No blowouts, all tight fixtures in such a crucial moment of the season. What more could we ask for with 4 games left in the season? A close title race? Check. Numerous teams jockeying for 4th? Double check. A tight relegation battle? Yes, yes, YES. Right now I would include at least five clubs still in danger of the drop zone, and who doesn’t love a good relegation scrap? Serie A is alive and well my friends, and this season could not be more exciting as we make our final turn. Roma/Inter, Sampdoria/Palermo, Atalanta/Bologna/Lazio/Udinese/etc.; these are the races we’ll be rapt on for the final month. This seems like the first year in ages where we had genuine excitement at all parts of the table.

Personally, I couldn’t be more thrilled, especially if Roma can pull through and take the Scudetto out from Inter’s grasp. If Juve can’t be there, it’s certainly a breath of fresh air to get some new blood in there. So cheers, and here’s hoping the race plays out till the final match day. See you next week.

“Inter remain the favorites for the title. The other contenders are Milan, and they will fight it out among themselves. The Scudetto doesn’t interest me.” With nine games to go and four points behind the league leaders, Roma, not Milan, are best poised to knock Inter Milan off its berth and win the scudetto. Moreover, if the Giallorossi manager harbors any hopes of a title, he’s certainly doing his best to conceal it, and more importantly going about it the right way.

The Tinkerman. Il Mister. El General. Claudio Ranieri has had his fair share of aliases as well as critics and supporters during his managerial spells in Spain, England and Italy. Best known for his mercurial tactical style, the mild mannered football character has been a revelation at Roma since taking over the reigns at the capital following the resignation of Luciano Spaletti. Ousted by Turin giants Juventus after less than a season amidst claims he had lost the dressing room in relation to well publicized spats with Juventus golden boys – Del Piero and Buffon – along with calls for his “head” by fans, his subsequent appointment at Roma was met with loads of skepticism amongst little fan fare.

“I have finally returned home… coaching Roma is a dream come true” exclaimed the Rome native despite cackles across media outlets and Giallorossi faithfuls who labeled him as “nice guy loser”, furthermore questioning his ability to rejuvenate a team bereft of confidence, lacking ideas on and off the pitch and over-dependent on often crocked aging maestro Francesco Totti. Seven months later, echoes of discontent and skepticism have faded, replaced with perpetual admiration and lavish praises as he continues to work wonders in Rome. And with nine games left, a Seria A title is within grasp.

Ranieri’s tactical nous has fashioned the team into a current 19 game league unbeaten run. Perhaps his most remarkable bit of skill has been his transformation of Mirko Vucinic from a deep-lying / support striker into a complete forward; thus the Montenegrin international is the catalyst of the team’s attack – responsible for creating and scoring goals – and simply drifts around when the team is not in position. Whilst Totti is still the team’s trequartista, Vucinic’s maturity into this new role has been essential for a team which operates without any true wingers, relying on surging wing-backs to provide much needed width. The 26 yr old leads the team in fouls suffered, total shots, shots on target, assists and only trails Totti by a single goal – whose tally of 10 consists of four penalties compared to Vucinic’s lone spot kick.

As the club from the Eternal city holds hopes for a title, it faces its biggest test of the season this weekend when it hosts Inter Milan. If the Giallorossi can secure a draw or unlikely win again against the Nerazzurri, it faces an easier end of the season fixture list in comparison to its title challengers. Away games at Bari, Chievo, Parma and home ties against Atalanta and Cagliari are very winnable. The derby against relegation threatened Lazio is expected to be the biggest in recent seasons, then followed the following week with a visit of Sampdoria.

Unlike Roma, AC Milan finish the season with five tough fixtures; visits to Sampdoria, Palermo and Genoa while hosting Fiorentina at the San Siro on May 2nd. The final match of the season sees Leonardo’s Rossineri entertain Zaccheroni’s Old Lady – one which will undoubtedly dictate whether Juventus secure a crucial champions league spot. Inter Milan, on the other hand, have a much easier run in than AC Milan but have their sights set on Champions league glory and will more than likely rotate the squad to accommodate its two front battle.

Should Inter slip up in the title race, expect Ranieri’s coy approach to be overshadowed by the Italian press adulation and optimism for Roma’s prospects of its 4th ever scudetto, its first since Capello’s 2000-2001 season. The man who laid the groundwork for Benitez’s Valencia domestic and European triumph, the unsung hero of Mourinho’s Chelsea tenure, the savior of Parma from relegation certainty and honor in Juventus‘ rise from calamity might finally get a deserved reward.

It’s due time lady luck smiled on the butcher’s son.

The Merseyside giants have reached a transfer agreement with Italian side AS Roma for midfielder Alberto Aquilani.

The news came shortly after news broke that midfielder Xabi Alonso had been granted his desired move to Real Madrid. Alonso was vital in Liverpool’s impressive campaign last season which saw them bring Manchester United to the wire in chase of the Premier League title. They ultimately lost the title race to United, but it was the club’s best league finish since the 2001/2002 season.

Alonso’s sale to Madrid left Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez with a reported $50 million, and he did not hesitate to use it in acquiring Aquilani. The Italian international has been highly rated in Serie A for some time, and Benitez will surely be hoping that the 25-year-old can fill the gap left by Alonso.

The transfer fee is reportedly in the range of $33 million, and personal terms can be agreed after Aquilani undergoes a medical later in the week.

Van der Sar Sidelined For Season Start

The Dutch keeper was a pivotal figure for last season’s Premier League champions, but he will have to wait to begin the 2009/2010 campaign after undergoing surgery on his left hand.

He broke his finger during a penalty shoot-out against Bayern Munich in the pre-season Audi Cup tournament and is now expected to be out for eight weeks.

The news means that reserve keepers Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszcak will fight for the number one spot in van der Sar’s absence.

Both keepers were given a half in United’s preseason match against Valencia at Old Trafford on Wednesday, with neither letting in a goal.

Foster is likely to get the nod after an impressive outing in the Carling Cup last season, and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has consistently gone on record as saying he believes the young keeper will be England’s number one in the future.

Alongside an impressive back four, van der Sar set a Premier League record for consecutive clean sheets last season, and his massive experience will be missed by United. However, his spell on the treatment table will give Sir Alex a strong indication as to whether Foster or Kuszcak are truly ready to step into starting role.

Drogba Pens New Chelsea Deal

Didier Drogba signed an extension this week that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2012.

The Ivory Coast international has long been linked with a move to Italian champions Inter Milan to reunite with former Blues boss Jose Mourinho.

The striker himself admitted he was close to leaving the club, saying, “”Of course I had been saying things years ago like I wanted to leave but people can always change their mind. That was a decision because I was a bit frustrated.”

Despite falling out of the Chelsea first team during former manager Luiz Felipe Scolari’s short tenure in London, Drogba found new life under interim boss Guus Hiddink at the back-end of last season.

With the contract extension, Drogba has signaled his intention to stay on under new manager Carlo Ancelotti and challenge for top honors.

“I’ve been here five years now and I love it here. It’s simple. I love the club, I feel good here and I want to continue to win titles with them,” he said. “I have decided to extend my contract with Chelsea for two extra years and I am very happy and proud to continue to wear the blue of Chelsea until then.”

He added that his number one priority is winning the Champions League after coming agonizingly close in the last few seasons.

“My number one objective is to win the Champions League. I am convinced that this year we can go to the end and finally lift this trophy.”

Drogba joins teammates Florent Malouda and John Obi Mikel in signing new deals at the club.

Hull Seal Altidore Loan

United States international Jozy Altidore will join the Tigers on loan next season from Spanish club Villarreal.

The 19-year-old New Jersey native joined the Yellow Submarines last summer, but in his first season in Europe he only managed six appearances.

Altidore will move to England with the hopes of gaining valuable first team experience in the Premiership.

His appeal was no doubt boosted by an impressive outing in the Confederations Cup this summer for his country. Altidore scored the first goal in a surprising 2-nil victory against Spain in the semifinals.

Hull experienced their first-ever Premier League season last year, but despite an impressive start, they suffered a dreadful second half of the campaign that saw them just barely escape the drop zone. The Tigers finished in 17th place, only one point above relegated Newcastle United.

It has been a tough transfer window for Hull manager Phil Brown, who said the summer was “a frustrating time for a number of clubs”. However, he was delighted with the addition of Altidore to his squad.

“Jozy is unproven at this level but has great potential, and we hope can fill the void of goals from the front line.”

Location: Stadio Olimpico (Rome)

Roma are out of contention for the Champions League, but they must hold on to their sixth place position in order to play in European football next year. The Giallorossi currently stand two points ahead of Palermo, so a loss here could be critical. Catania have achieved safety and have nothing really left to play for this season other than dignity. A poor run of results has seen the Elefanti lose five of their last six matches. The future of coach Walter Zenga is in jeopardy due to the poor form. The Sicilian club still has time to silence their critics and please their fans in these final three games. Young Japenese striker Takayuki Morimoto has his sights set high.

“Now all is well, we are saved, and personally I want to round off this championship by improving and scoring more goals if possible,” Morimoto said. “The rest of the team is determined to give their best from here to the finish.” (Source: Calciomercato)

The home team will be without Alberto Aquilani, who just underwent season ending surgery, Julio Baptista, Cicinho, Doni, and Juan. Pablo Ledesma and Alessandro Potenza are out for the visitors. There are no suspensions in this match.

Prediction: Roma 2-1 Catania
Roma gets back on track with a win and stays in contention for Europe.

Roma (4-2-3-1): Artur; Cassetti, Mexes, Panucci, Riise; De Rossi, Pizarro; Taddei, Perotta, Vucinic; Totti

The second fixture on Saturday features Udinese against title contenders Milan. Udinese are currently in sparkling form after winning their last five. The Zebrette have closed the gap to sixth place to just three points, and are hoping to remain in contention for a spot in the Europa League. Milan could have gained ground on Serie A leaders Inter last week, but after drawing against Juventus their chance of a Scudetto is near impossible. The Rossoneri will likely keep their focus on holding off Juventus and maintain their position in second place, which would ensure them a spot in the Champions League next season. Brazilian starlet Alexandre Pato is aiming for three points against Udinese.

“It will be a difficult match, and it is one that we must win to ensure that we will automatically qualify for the Champions League,” Pato said “It is true that I haven’t scored for a long time, but in any case I am enjoying my time here, and I always give my all for this club. I will do my best to change this against Udinese.” (Source: Milan Channel)

The home side will field their usual 4-3-3 formation, but have a number of injuries to deal with. Andrea Coda, Antonio Di Natale, Felipe, Damiano Ferronetti, and Fernando Tissone are all hurt. Milan will miss goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, Marco Borriello, Kakha Kaladze, and Alessandro Nesta to injury. David Beckham and Giuseppe Favalli are suspended, while Pato will likely start on the bench

Prediction: Udinese 2-2 Milan
Udinese are one of the hottest sides in Serie A right now, but Milan could prove a little too powerful of an opponent.

Udinese (4-3-3): Handanovic; Isla, Zapata, Domizzi, Pasquale; Inler, D’Agostino, Asamoah; Pepe, Quagliarella, Sanchez
Milan (4-3-3): Dida; Zambrotta, Maldini, Senderos, Jankulovski; Flamini, Pirlo, Ambrosini; Seedorf, Kaka, Inzaghi

Bologna-Lecce
Location: Stadio Renata Dall’Ara (Bologna)

The Dall’Ara is host to a relegation six-pointer between Bologna and Lecce. Bologna are currently one point shy of escaping the relegation zone. The Rossoblu cannot afford to lose any ground on Torino, but they have failed to capitalize on direct matches with their relegation rivals the last two weeks. A draw against Torino and home loss to Reggina did little to help the Felsinei, and this could be their last chance for survival. Lecce is in a similar position, one point below Bologna and just as eager to get a win and escape relegation. A draw against Juventus boosted morale for the southern club, but only managed a home draw against Napoli last week. When these two teams met earlier in the season, it ended in a 0-0 draw. Lecce defender Tiziano Polenghi has stressed the importance of a victory this weekend.

“Next Sunday, it’s necessary for us to get three points at Bologna, the victory would enable us to have hope of achieving salvation,” Polenghi said. “It will be a match that we will have to show our intelligence in, we cannot let the nerves get affect us.” (Source: www.uslecce.it)

Bologna will be without Gabriele Paonessa, Cesar, Luigi Lavecchia, Davide Bombardini and Miguel Britos due to injury. Lecce has injuries to Vitorino Antunes, Mariano Angelo and Papa Waigo. Andrea Zanchetta will be sorely missed by Lecce as he sits out with a one-match ban.

Prediction: Bologna 1-1 Lecce
A tense affair ends with both sides cancelling each other out in a draw.

Bologna (4-5-1): Antonioli; Zenoni, Moras, Castellini, Terzi; Valiani, Mignazzini, Volpi, Mudingayi, Coelho; Di Vaio
Lecce (4-4-2): Benussi; Polenghi, Fabiano, Esposito, Ariatti; Giacomazzi, Edinho, Munari, Caserta; Konan, Tiribocchi

Fiorentina-Sampdoria
Location: Stadio Artemio Franchi (Florence)

Fiorentina are in prime position to earn a historic Champions League qualification spot. The Viola currently sit in fourth place and have a gap of three points between themselves and Genoa. The Tuscan side have an inconsistent season, but recent results have seen them turn their season completely around. The Viola have won five of their last six. Meanwhile, the season is pretty much over for visiting side Sampdoria. The Blucerchiati came up short in the Coppa Italia final recently, but have achieved Serie A safety and recently demolished Reggina by a score of 5-0. Fiorentina will be the likely favorites in this one and their French goalkeeper Sebastian Frey is aiming for the Champions League.

“We absolutely want to come in the top four. I think we deserve it and have focused on this goal,” Frey said. (Source: violanews.it)

The Viola will be without the injured Emiliano Bonazzoli, Adrian Mutu, Franco Semioli, and Mario Santana. Defender Gianluca Comotto is suspended. A tired Sampdoria sideh has injuries to Claudio Bellucci, Stefano Lucchini, and Paolo Sammarco. Lithuanian wingman Marius Stankevicius is suspended.

Prediction: Fiorentina 3-1 Sampdoria
All signs point to a victory for La Viola in this one.

Fiorentina (4-2-3-1): Frey; Zauri, Dainelli, Gamberini, Pasqual; Montolivo, Felipe Melo; Kuzmanovic, Jovetic, Vargas; Gilardino
Sampdoria (3-5-2): Castellazi; Campagnaro, Gastaldello, Raggi; Padalino, Franceschini, Dessena, Delvecchio, Ziegler; Pazzini, Marilungo

Genoa-Chievo
Location: Stadio Luigi Ferraris (Genoa)

Two teams at opposite ends of the table clash at the Ferraris on Sunday. Genoa have recently slipped out of fourth place, and need to get out of their mini slump for a chance to catch Fiorentina and get into the Champions League. A derby win over Sampdoria boosted morale for the Grifone, but it perhaps took too much energy as they drew against Atalanta the following week. Whatever happens, Genoa fans have to admit that their current situation is more than any of them could have asked for before the season started. Chievo have not been able to escape relegation just yet. The Flying Donkeys have had a difficult schedule in recent weeks, losing to Udinese and earning tough draws against Roma and Inter. Genoa is not much more of an easier task, but Chievo will give their all for a chance to earn mathematical salvation. Genoa defender Salvatore Bocchetti has his eye on the Champions League.

“If the Champions League is our objective, then finishing in fourth certainly is a dream for us,” Bocchetti said. “Even if we were to end up fifth, qualifying for the Europa League will still be a historical milestone for us anyway.” (Source: Corrierre dello Sport)

Genoa will be without Alessio Scarpi because of injury and Domenico Criscito, Giandomenico Mesto, and Sokratis Papasthopoulos due to suspensions. Giuseppe Colucci, Stephen Makinwa, and Francesco Scardina are injured for Chievo, while defender Santiago Morero is suspended.

Prediction: Genoa 3-0 Chievo
Genoa are an exc ellent at home, only losing twice this year. They will be too much for Chievo.

Genoa (3-4-3): Rubinho; Bocchetti, Ferrari, D’Alessandro; Rossi, Thiago Motta, Juric, Modesto; Sculli, Milito, Palladino
Chievo (4-3-1-2): Sorrentino; Frey, Mandelli, Yepes, Mantovani; Luciano, Rigoni, Marcolini; Pinzi; Pellissier, Bogdani

Juventus-Atalanta
Location: Stadio Olimpico (Turin)

Juventus have had four consecutive draws and are without a win in five of their last six matches. This run of form has seen them drop out of Scudetto contention and likely out of second place as well. The Bianconeri currently occupy third place and have Fiorentina breathing down their neck just three points away. Juventus must turn their season around and Atalanta might be the perfect opponent to do so. The Orobici have only won two of their last ten and are currently nestled in the middle of the Serie A table with nothing left to play for. To add to this, Atalanta has a coach in Gigi Del Neri who is destined to leave the club at the end of the season. Juventus midfielder Christian Poulsen is adamant that his club will not slip any further down the table, despite the momentum of Fiorentina.

“We are three points clear of Fiorentina at the moment, and we are the favorites at this point,” Poulsen affirmed in an interview, as reported by the website Fobazo,” Poulsen said. “If we win against Atalanta on Sunday, and then one more after that, our qualification to the Champions League will be assured.” (Source: goal.com)

Juventus will stick with a 4-4-2 system with Alessandro Del Piero being paired with Vincenzo Iaquinta in attack, leaving Amauri on the bench. The Old Lady has a plethora of absences, most notably Momo Sissoko, Claudio Marchisio, Hasan Salhamidzic, and Cristian Molinaro, as well as a suspension to Giorgio Chiellini. Atalanta will be missing Adriano Ferreira Pinto, Ferdinando Coppola, Leonardo Talamonti, and Tiberio Guarente.

Prediction: Juventus 2-1 Atalanta
Juventus can get that much needed win against an Atalanta team who have nothing to play for.

Juventus (4-4-2): Buffon; Grygera, Legrottaglie, Mellberg, De Ceglie; Camoranesi, Zanetti, Poulsen, Nedved; Iaquinta, Del Piero
Atalanta (4-4-2): Consigli; Garics, Capelli, Manfredini, Bellini; Defendi, Cigarini, Parravicini, Padoin; Doni, Floccari

Napoli-Torino
Location: Stadio San Paolo (Naples)

Tension will be high at the San Paolo as Torino looks to gain points and take another step closer to safety. The visitors could well fall back into the relegation zone due to the direct encounter between Bologna and Lecce. Three points would be valuable insurance for the Granata if one of their relegation rivals were to win on Sunday. Torino will like their chances against a Napoli side that is still struggling to find its identity under new coach Roberto Donadoni. The Azzurri are safe from relegation and have nothing left to play for at this point accept the respect of their supporters and the media. Donadoni has plenty of motivation to finish out this year on a high note in order to silence his many critics. Meanwhile, Torino have had an up and down month and coach Giancarlo Camolese admits they are still making too many mistakes.

“There is only one point difference between us and Bologna, therefore our potentials are similar,” the tactician said. “Toro is in constant improvement, but we still make mistakes. However, nothing is impossible in sport.” (Source: TorinoGranata)

Donadoni will once again field the 3-5-2 tactic that was adapted from his predecessor Edy Reja. Inacio Pia and German Denis will start up front over out of favor striker Marcelo Zalayeta. Zalayeta was recently a victim of a home burglary while he was sleeping. Napoli have several injuries to deal with. Walter Gargano, Christian Maggio, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Leandro Rinaudo, and keeper Gennaro Iezzo are all hurt, while midfielder Luigi Vitale is suspended. Torino will miss Elvis Abbruscato, Eugenio Corini, Marco Di Loreto, Nicola Ventola, and Paolo Zanetti all to injury.

Prediction: Napoli 2-2 Torino
A draw that does little for both teams.

Napoli (3-5-2): Navarro; Santacroce, Cannavaro, Contini; Mannini, Hamsik, Pazienza, Bogliacino, Datolo; Denis, Pia
Torino (3-4-1-2): Sereni; Franceschini, Natali, Pisano; Diana, Barone, Dzemali, Rubin; Rosina; Bianchi, Stellone

Palermo-Lazio
Location: Stadio Renzo Barbera (Palermo)

Fresh off of their Coppa Italia victory, a tired Lazio side will travel away from the mainland to face a Palermo team who are still hoping for European qualification. Lazio are still coming down off of their Coppa high and must jump back into the reality of Serie A. The Bioncocelesti have lost three in a row in league play and really have little to left to play for. The Roman club sets up as the perfect opponent for Palermo and coach Davide Ballardini, who finds himself on the hot seat if he fails to win this weekend. Despite being just a win away from a potential European spot, fiery club president Maurizio Zamparini has been highly critical of Ballardini and this match could be the last straw. Veteran Rosanero midfielder Roberto Guana believes his team can still reach the Europa League.

“In any way, we cannot stop believing in the dream: the UEFA Cup zone is only two points away and we are three teams fighting for qualification until the last breath,” Guana said. “It would be a prestigious target, I already had the luck and honor to play in this competition.” (Source: La Repubblica)

Federico Balzaretti and Croatian hitman Igor Budan sit out with injury for the Sicilians. The injury list for Lazio includes Simone Inzaghi, Pasquale Foggia, and Goran Pandev. Cristian Brocchi and Sebastiano Siviglia will be banned for this match.

Prediction: Palermo 3-1 Lazio
Lazio might rest many key players after their dramatic Coppa clash. Palermo has much more at stake and will no doubt fight for three points.

Palermo (4-3-1-2): Amelia; Cassini, Migliaccio, Bovo, Savini; Nocerino, Liverani, Bresciano; Simplicio; Cavani, Miccoli
Lazio (4-4-2): Muslera; De Silvestri, Diakite, Rozenhal, Radu; Lichtsteiner, Ledesma, Matuzalem, Del Nero; Zarete, Rocchi

Reggina-Cagliari
Location: Stadio Oreste Granillo (Reggio Calabria)

It could be the last realistic chance for southerners Reggina to stay in Serie A when they host Sardinian outfit Cagliari on Sunday. The Amaranto had their spirits lifted after victories against Atalanta and Bologna and a draw against Juventus, but a 5-0 thrashing last week at the hands of Sampdoria wiped out morale. Reggina are no strangers to incredible survival stories, and will have to experience one again as the season comes to a close. Visitors Cagliari have surpassed expectations for the season and still find themselves within reach of a Europa League spot. The Isolani were flying high until recently when they were demolished by Palermo and held to a draw by Roma. Three wins in the final three matches is what Reggina is aiming for to ensure their salvation, and club president Lillo Foti is calling on the fans to show their support.

“Against Cagliari we want a packed stadium, because we did not manage to make use of the pitch factor, since we only obtained two wins at home, whilst we obtained three victories away from home,” Foti said. (Source: Sportmediaset.it)

Reggina striker Bernardo Corradi could well end up on the bench again in favor of young strikers Fabio Ceravolo and Franco Brienza in the 3-4-1-2 system. Francesco Cozza will be the likely start in the trequarista role. Davide Di Gennaro, Alessio Sestu, and defender Santos are all hurt. Carlos Valdez will be banned after picking up a red card in the last match. Andrea Lazzari and Andrea Parola are both injured for Cagliari, while Daniele Conti and Andrea Cossu are suspended.

Prediction: Reggina 2-2 Cagliari
Reggina are still feeling the hangover from the 5-0 loss to Sampdoria and will take another step closer to Serie B.

Reggina (3-4-1-2): Puggioni; Lanzaro, Cirillo, Costa; Vigiani, Barreto, Carmona, Barilla; Cozza; Brienza, Ceravolo
Cagliari (4-3-1-2): Marchetti; Pisano, Lopez, Canini, Agostini; Mancosu, Sivakov, Biondini; Fini; Jeda; Matri

Inter-Siena (2:30 pm ET)
Location: San Siro (Milan)

Serie A leaders Inter could wrap up a fourth straight Scudetto in front of their home fans with a victory over Siena on Sunday. It is the first season at the helm for Inter coach Jose Mourinho, and if he earns a title it would be his fifth in the last seven seasons in three different countries. Inter have surprisingly only won once their last five matches, letting city rivals Milan edge closer and keep their hopes of a title alive as well. Siena travels to the San Siro fresh off a victory which has sealed their Serie A status for next season. The Tuscan minnows should be content with their current status and have nothing left to play for as the season winds down.

Inter welcome back star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic after his one-match suspension. The lanky Swede will likely be featured at the tip of a 4-3-2-1 Christmas Tree formation, supported by Mario Balotelli and Luis Figo. Douglas Maicon, Nelson Rivas and Francesco Bolzoni are all injured for the Nerazzurri. Striker Julio Cruz will serve a suspension. Injury woes for Siena include Massimo Maccarone, Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos, and Mirko Guadalupi.

Prediction: Inter 2-0 Siena
Inter wrap up their fourth consecutive Serie A title with an easy victory.

Inter (4-3-2-1): Julio Cesar; Zanetti, Cordoba, Samuel, Chivu; Cambiasso, Stankovic, Muntari; Figo, Balotelli, Ibrahimovic
Siena (4-3-1-2): Curci; Zuniga, Portanova, Brandao, Rossi; Vergassola, Codrea, Galloppa; Kharja; Calaio, Ghezzal

Atalanta-Genoa
Location: Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia (Bergamo)

Hosts Atalanta are safe from relegation and have little to play for, looking flat in a 3-0 loss to Udinese last weekend. Visitors Genoa are fresh off of their derby victory over Sampdoria and continue to push for a Champions League spot. With rumors of a summer exit for Atalanta coach Gigi Del Neri, you wonder if the Orobici have anything left to give in the final four matches.

Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini has had an excellent season leading the Grifone and has been allegedly lined up as a potential replacement for Claudio Ranieri at Juventus. Regardless of his future, Gasperini has four matches left to lead Genoa to a historic Champions league qualifying position. The Griofone find themselves just one point adrift of fourth place Fiorentina and cannot afford any slip ups with the Viola being favored this Sunday.

When the two met earlier this season it ended in a 1-1 draw. Ferdinando Coppola, Leonardo Talamonti and Ferreira Pinto are out with injuries for Atalanta, while Gianpaolo Bellini and Cristiano Doni have suspensions. The visitors only injury is backup keeper Alessio Scarpi, but have more of a concern with suspensions. The fiery Derby della Lanterna has resulted in suspensions to Matteo Ferrari and Thiago Motta.

Prediction: Atalanta 1-3 Genoa
Atalanta can cruise through the end of this season without having any pressure to win. Genoa are still playing at a high level and are not going to back down.

Atalanta (4-4-1-1): Consigli; Garics, Capelli, Manfredini, Peluso; Defendi, Guarente, Cigarini, Padoin; Valdes; Floccar
Genoa (3-4-3): Rubinho; Papastathopoulous, Bocchetti, Criscito; Ross, Milanetto, Juric, Modesto; Sculli, Milito, Palladino

Cagliari-Roma
Location: Stadio Sant’Elia (Cagliari)

Roma take on Sardinian side Cagliari in what could be the last chance for the Isolani to stay in the hunt for European qualification. Roma have been one of the most disappointing teams in Serie A, performing far worse than expectations. Cagliari, in contrast, have far exceeded expectations and being in the hunt for Europe is an added bonus on an excellent season. Rossoblu midfielder Michele Fini believes that Europe is still a very obtainable goal for the Isolani.

“It would be a prestigious target, for us players, but also for the club and the fans,” Fini said. “We know our qualities, the group is strong. On Sunday we will be facing a big team like Roma. Let’s see how the game goes and let’s think one game at a time.” (Source: Mediagol.it)

Roma are out of Champions League contention and will need a win against Cagliari as insurance for a spot in the Europa League. The Giallorossi had a 3-2 victory against the islanders earlier this season, coming from behind to get the win. Andrea, Cossu, Andrea Lazzari, and Andrea Parola are all injured for Cagliari. Roma will have a thin bench with injuries to Alberto Aquilani, Julio Baptista, Cicinho, Doni, and Juan. John Arne Riise is out with a suspension.

Prediction: Cagliari 1-1 Roma
Cagliari perform extremely well at home and will earn at least a point against a Roma side that is in turmoil.

Cagliari (4-3-1-2): Marchetti; Pisano, Lopez, Canini, Agostini; Fini, Conti, Biondini; Jeda; Acquafresca, Marti
Roma (4-2-3-1): Artur; Motta, Mexes, Panucci, Tonetto; De Rossi, Pizzaro; Taddei, Brighi, Vucinic; Totti

Catania-Fiorentina
Location: Stadio Angelo Massimino (Catania)

Having won five of their last six, Fiorentina are teetering on the verge of Champions League qualification. The Viola are holding on to fourth place by just a single point over Genoa. A win against Catania will solidify their chances and turn an inconsistent season into somewhat of a success. Catania have had a rather mediocre season in comparison to the pre-season expectations for the Sicilian club. The Elefanti find themselves at the magic 40 point number that is usually an assurance of safety. However, they are only 11 points clear of the relegation with four matches remaining, so they will have motivation to pick up points and obtain mathematical safety.

Fiorentina winger Juan Manuel Vargas is finally feeling good about his position with the club after struggling to settle in early on. The Peruvian is hoping his team can obtain a Champions League spot at any cost.

“We are currently looking only at what we do, as we are not interested in what the other teams do,” Vargas said. “We only think about arriving as high as possible.” (Source: La Repubblica)

Fiorentina will make the trip down south without the likes of Emiliano Bonazzoli, Adrian Mutu, Mario Alberto Santana, and Franco Semioli who are all out injured. Catania are missing Pablo Ledesma and Alessandro Potenza, while young Japanese striker Takayuki Morimoto sits out with a ban.

Prediction: Catania 1-1 Fiorentina
The home fans will fill the stadium and create a difficult atmosphere for Fiorentina. With Serie A salvation within their reach, Catania will do anything they can to get some points.

Catania (4-4-2): Kosicky; Silvestri, Silvestre, Stovini, Capuano; Sciacca, Carboni, Biagianti, Tedesco; Martinez, Mascara
Fiorentina (4-2-3-1): Frey; Comotto, Dainelli, Gamberini, Pasqual; Montolivo, Felipe Melo; Kuzmanovic, Jovetic, Vargas; Gilardino

Chievo-Inter
Location: Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi (Verona)

An Inter win against Chievo could wrap up a Serie A title for the defending champions, pending on the outcome of the Milan-Juventus. An Inter defeat could make for a nervous finish to the season for Nerazzaurri faithful. Chievo will be a tricky test with plenty on the line for them as well. The Flying Donkeys have had a terrific run of results, but still find themselves shy of Serie A safety. A goalless draw away to Roma last week gave some added confidence to relegation strugglers. Chievo are 5 points above the relegation and coach Domenico Di Carlo knows that his team cannot afford to slip up.

“We’ve been training hard since Tuesday to prepare ourselves for this match,” Di Carlo said. “Inter are a tough team – they never give up. However, what’s certain is that, although the motivation is different, both sides will want to win. (Source: Sportmediaset.it)

Chievo will have added confidence in knowing that Inter striking sesnsation Zlatan Ibrahimovic is suspended for this match. Inter manager Jose Mourinho could resort to a 4-3-2-1 tactical approach without his star Swede. Outcast striker Hernan Crespo has sensationally been tipped to start in the absence of Ibrahimovic. The Argentine has struggled to find any playing time under Mourinho and is set for a summer exit. He will use this opportunity as an audition for any of the European clubs interested in his services. Francesco Bolzoni, Nicolas Burdisso, Douglas Maicon, Sully Muntari, and Nelson Rivas are all also out for the Nerazzurri with injuries. Giuseppe Colucci, Stephen Makinwa, and Francesco Scardina are out injured for Chievo. Antonio Langella and Giampiero Pinzi are suspended.

Prediction: Chievo 1-1 Inter
Inter will get tripped up against a Chievo side who are desperate for points. The absence of Ibrahimovic will be too much for Inter to overcome.

Chievo (4-3-1-2): Sorrentino; Frey, Morero, Yepes, Mantovani; Luciano, Rigoni, Marcolini; Bentivoglio; Pellissier, Bogdani
Inter (4-3-2-1): Julio Cesar; Zanetti, Cordoba, Samuel, Maxwell; Viera, Cambiasso, Stankovic; Figo, Balotelli; Crespo

Lecce-Napoli
Location: Stadio Via Del Mare (Lecce)

A showdown in the south of Italy features relegation fighters Lecce against Napoli, a team that has struggled to make any impact after a mid-season coaching change. Napoli has had only one victory under coach Roberto Donadoni and they find themselves on the lower half of the table, albeit safe from the drop at this point. Lecce have also had a dismal run, but their confidence has been bolstered in recent weeks with a victory over Catania and a shock draw against giants Juventus. The Salentini now have Reggina breathing down their necks and need a win to keep their hopes alive of playing top flight football for a second consecutive season. Lecce Midfielder Fabio Caserta is only focused on a win this Sunday.

“We shall try to win these last four games of the season without letting ourselves be conditioned by how our rivals’ games go,” Caserta said. “The fight to stay in the Italian top flight, in my opinion, will remain open until the last matchday.” (Source: La Repubblica)

There has been some controversy this week in the Napoli camp after striker Marcelo Zalayeta failed to show up for training. The club has stated it was an unjustified absence and Donadoni was furious with the player. Zalayeta has issued a public apology, but it seems he will stay at home while his teammates travel to Lecce. Ezequiel Lavezzi is still out for Napoli, in addition to Walter Gargano, Gennaro Iezzo, Christian Maggio, and Leandro Rinaudo. The absence of Lavezzi and Zalayeta will likely lead to a striking duo of German Denis and Inacio Pia for the Azzurri. Lecce have a few injury concerns as well: Angelo, Antunes, and Papa Waigo will all be out.

Prediction: Lecce 1-0 Napoli
Despite their low position in the table, Lecce have some talented players and they showed they are capable of playing with anyone after drawing with Inter. Napoli have little motivation and a plethora of issues on the attacking side. Look for Lecce to squeak out a win.

Lecce (4-4-2): Benussi; Polenghi, Fabiano, Esposito, Ariatti; Giacomozzi, Edinho, Munari, Caserta; Konan, Tribocchi
Napoli (3-5-2): Navarro; Santacroce, Cannavaro, Contini; Montervino, Blasi, Amodio, Hamsik, Mannini; Denis, Pia

Milan-Juventus (2:30 pm ET)
Location: San Siro (Milan)

Two heavyweights duke it out in a fight for second place as Milan host a Juventus side who are desperate to make something out of their disappointing season. These two teams have had completely opposite fortunes in recent months. Milan have won five in a row, including seven on their last eight, and have themselves still with the slimmest of chances to win the Scudetto. Meanwhile, the heat is on Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri as his team is without a win in their last five. The Bionconeri suffered draws against the likes of Chievo, Reggina, and Lecce. Juventus took care of Milan 4-2 earlier this season, but times were certainly different and Milan star player Kaka was out injured. Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti belives his team can continue their excellent form against a struggling Juventus side.

“Juve are going through a period of difficulty and this will be a stimulus for us,” Ancelotti said. “If we win then there will be great advanatges. It’s hard for teams to play us at the moment.”

The fate of Claudio Ranieiri will no doubt be decided in these final four matches. There will be added difficulty for the tactician, as he must deal with suspensions to Pavel Nedved and Olof Mellburg. The laundry list of injuries for the Old Lady include Albin Ekdal, Dario Knezevic, Christian Molinaro, Hasan Salihamidzic, and Momo Sissoko. Captain Alessandro Del Piero looks to be headed for a spot on the bench, while young Sebastian Giovinco could finally be utilized. Milan will be without first-choice goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, Marco Borriello, Kakha Kaladze, and Alessandro Nesta. Rino Gattuso and Alexandre Pato have recovered enough for spots on the bench

Prediction: Milan 3-1 Juventus
Milan are a different team with a healthy Kaka. They have an arsenal of weapons on the bench and the home crowd to back them. Juve has little chance of getting anything out of this one.

Milan (4-3-1-2): Dida; Zambrotta, Maldini, Favalli, Jankulovski; Flamini, Pirlo, Ambrosini; Seedorf; Kaka, Inzaghi
Juventus (4-4-2): Buffon; Grygera, Legrottaglie, Chiellini, De Ceglie; Marchionni, Zanetti, Poulsen, Giovinco; Amauri, Iaquinta

Siena-Palermo
Location: Stadio Artemio Franchi (Siena)

Tuscan club Siena can guarantee Serie A safety in front of their home fans with a draw against Palermo, but the Sicilians also have plenty of motivation heading into this match. The Rosanero are sitting in seventh place, just a single point behind Roma, and could desperately use a win to booster their hopes of playing European football next season. In a humorous statement, outspoken Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini called the UEFA Cup a waste of time and the trophy a piece of tin that no one cares about.

Morale is high for Siena after a 2-1 victory of Napoli last week. Bianconeri defender Daniele Ficagna believes that win gives his team plenty of confidence against Palermo.

“It was an important win against a strong team. It allowed us to move closer to our objective, although we haven’t reached it mathematically,” Ficagna said. “We will do our best because we want to obtain the point that we still lack to be safe.” (Source: Mediagol.it)

Siena has some injury concerns for the upcoming match. Goalkeepers Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos and Emanuele Manitta, midfielder Mirko Guadalupi, and star striker Massimo Maccarone are all out. Palermo will miss starting defender Federico Balzaretti and striker Igor Budan.

Prediction: Siena 1-1 Palermo
Siena earns a difficult point while Palermo stumble in their hopes of European qualification.

Siena (4-3-1-2): Curci; Zuniga, Portanova, Brandao, Rossi; Verassola, Codrea, Galloppa; Kharja; Calaio, Ghezzal
Palermo (4-3-1-2): Amelia; Cassani, Migliaccio, Bovo, Savini; Nocerini, Liverani, Bresciano; Simplicio; Cavani, Miccoli

Torino-Bologna
Location: Stadio Olimpico (Turin)

The Stadio Olimpico hosts a true relegation six pointer when Bologna comes to town to face Torino. As the relegation battle heats up in Serie, Torino find themselves just one point ahead of Bologna and the relegation zone. The Emiliani club lost a crucial match against relegation rivals Reggina last weekend, and they will be grateful to be given one more chance to climb into safety. Torino have been trading wins and losses week after week, and if the pattern keeps up they are do for an important win against Bologna. Granata striker Roberto Stellone is aiming for a victory to get his team out of danger.

“With Camolese we have obtained two important home wins and in Palermo and Florence we played two very good games in which we were unfortunate,” Stellone said. “Now we will play this game just like we did against Siena. We will be concentrated and careful with every ball.” (Source: La Repubblica)

Elvis Abbruscato, Eugenio Corini, Marco Di Loreto, Nicola Ventola, and Paolo Zanetti are all out injured for Torino. Goalkeeper Matteo Sereini and Angelo Ogbanna are serving suspensions. Bologna have several injuries, including Miguel Britos, Davide Bombardini, Cesar, Luigi Lavecchia, and Gabriele Paonessa. Nicola Mingazzini and Massimo Mutarelli are suspended.

Prediction: Torino 1-1 Bologna
Siena earns a difficult point while Palermo stumble in their hopes of European qualification.

Torino (3-4-1-2): Calderoni; Franceschini, Natali, Pisano; Diana, Barone, Dzemali; Rubin, Rosina; Bianchi, Stellone
Bologna (4-5-1): Antonioli; Zenoni, Moras, Castellini; Terzi, Valiani, Casarini, Volpi, Mudingayi, Coelho; Di Vaio

Bologna-Reggina (Sat, 12:00 ET)
Location: Stadio Renato Dall’Ara (Bologna)

Bologna and Reggina face off in what can best be described as a true relegation six-pointer. The two struggling sides are in desperation mode with just five weeks remaining in the season. Bologna are slightly better off with 29 points, just 1 shy of safety. While Reggina stand rock bottom with just 24 points, 6 away from salvation. A win here has added value because fellow relegation struggles Torino and Lecce are heavy underdogs in their respective matches (at Fiorentina, at Juventus).

Reggina president Lillo Foti, who feels his side deserves more points this season than the table shows, is treating this match as a playoff.

“On Saturday in Bologna we will have a playoff game, we shall see in what way we will come out of it,” Foti said. “At this point I don’t ask for luck, but for the conformation of the recent games.” (Source: Corriere Dello Sport)

The last time these two teams met it ended in a 2-2 draw, with Reggina losing the lead twice. Bologna have a certain advantage in a player named Marco Di Vaio. The journeyman striker is topping the Capocannoniere charts with 21 goals to his name. However, the Rossoblu have a laundry list of absences including Francesco Antonioli, Davide Bombardini, Miguel Angel Britos, Cesar, Luigi Lavecchia, Davide Marchini and Gabriele Paonessa. Sergio Volpi returns from suspension but should start from the bench. The only absence for the Amaranto is on-loan winger Alessio Sestu.

Prediction: Bologna 1-2 Reggina
Reggina have put together two impressive results: a road win at Atalanta and draw against Juventus. The Amaranto are fighting for their lives and will get closer to safety after this match.

Bologna (4-4-1-1): Colombo; Zenoni, Terzi, Moras, Belleri; Mutarelli, Mingazzini, Mudingayi, Valiani; Adailton, Di Vaio
Reggina (3-5-2): Puggioni; Lanzaro, Valdez, Santos; Vigiani, Barreto, Carmona, Hallfredsson, Barilla; Brienza, Corradi

Inter-Lazio (Sat, 2:30 ET)
Location: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (Milan)

Inter stumbled last week with a 1-0 loss to Napoli and need a win here to gain some breathing room, as the Scudetto is not quite sealed just yet. Lazio also had a minor setback in week 33 with a loss to Atalanta, putting their chances at European qualification in jeopardy. Inter stand 7 points clear of 2nd place Milan, while Lazio are just two points shy of Cagliari and the last UEFA Cup slot.

Lazio have had a decent year in which they have reached the Coppa Italia final, to be played on May 13 against Sampdoria. However, Lazio boss Delio Rossi has warned that his players need to focus on the last five games of the season and not put all of their eggs in the Coppa basket.

“We still have a lot to ask from these last five games,” Rossi said. “To reach the UEFA Cup we must not only rely on the Coppa Italia final, it would be a crime.” (Source: Sky)

Inter took care of Lazio 3-0 when the two met earlier this year. With city rivals AC Milan breathing down their necks, the Nerazzurri are hoping to repeat such a performance. They will have to do so without the injured Hernan Crespo, Douglas Maicon and Nelson Rivas. There are also suspensions for Mario Balotelli and Dejan Stankovic. Inter coach Jose Mourinho could compensate for his absences with a new 4-3-1-2 formation, featuring Julio Cruz paired with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as well as Luis Figo in a supporting role. Lazio are without former Inter midfielder Ousmane Dabo, Simone Inzaghi, Stefano Mauri and ace Goran Pandev.

Prediction: Inter 3-2 Lazio
Inter are eager to bounce back from last week’s loss. They hold their Scudetto fate in their own hands and surely will not blow this chance at home.

Inter (4-3-1-2): Julio Cesar; Santon, Cordoba, Samuel, Chivu; Zanetti, Cambiasso, Muntari; Figo; Cruz, Ibrahimovic
Lazio (4-4-2): Muslera; Lichtsteiner, Siviglia, Rozenhal, Kolarov; Brocchi, Ledesma, Matuzalem, Foggia; Zarate, Rocchi

Catania-Milan
Location: Stadio Angelo Massimino (Catania)

Milan are climbing up the Serie A table late in the season and trail leaders Inter by just 7 points with five weeks remaining. Their impressive form has seen them won four in a row, including a 3-0 thrashing of Palermo last week. The Rossoneri have a challenging road in front of them, including home games against Juventus and Roma and trips to Udine and Florence. Catania will likely be an easier task, having pretty much sealed their Serie A fate. The Elefanti have reached the magic 40 point target and are experimenting with new talent as the season comes to a close.

While Milan still certainly have a shot at catching cross-town rivals Inter, midfielder Massimo Ambrosini admits it will not be an easy task.

“Now we are directly behind them, but like Ancelotti I believe the comeback is difficult, if not impossible,” Ambrosini said. (Source: Corriere Dello Sport)

Milan are in the midst of an injury crisis and are heading into the weekend without the help of Christian Abbiati, Luca Antonini, Daniele Bonera, Marco Borriello, Gennaro Gattuso, Kakha Kaladze and Alessandro Nesta. Brazilian starlet Alexandre Pato should be fit enough to hold a spot on the bench, while midfielder Mathieu Flamini is suspended. Catania are only without the injured Pablo Ledesma and suspended youngster Fabio Sciacca. Catania boss Walter Zenga is also banned from the sidelines for one match after making disrespectful expressions at the end of the 2-1 loss to Lecce.

Prediction: Catania 1-1 Milan
Milan are favored and will be looking ahead to more challenging matches, making this a perfect trap game. It’s never easy to leave the mainland and pick up three points. Expect a battle at a sold out Massimino in Sicily.

Catania (4-1-3-2): Kosicky; Potenza, Silvestre, Stovini, Capuano; Carboni; Izco, Biagianti, Llama; Martinez, Mascara
Milan (4-3-2-1): Dida; Zambrotta, Maldini, Favalli, Jankulovski; Beckham, Pirlo, Amrbrosini; Kaka, Seedorf; Inzaghi

Fiorentina-Torino
Location: Stadio Artemio Franchi (Florence)

These two teams are sitting at different ends of the table and both had important wins last week. Fiorentina had an impressive 4-1 victory over Roma which kept their opponents out of the Champions League race, while propelling themselves into fourth place after a Genoa loss. The Viola now sit one point above Genoa in the last Champions League spot and will have to like their chances against Torino this weekend.

The Granata have only won once in their last seven meetings with Fiorentina, but are playing more inspired football after their 1-0 home win against Siena. It was a crucial win in their fight for survival after all three bottom clubs were able to pick up points last weekend. Torino are fighting for their lives as they sit just one measly point above the relegation zone, but they remain the only team in Serie A yet to pick up a road win this season.

Viola stopper Manuel Pasqual has urged his teammates to fight for fourth place and earn Champions League qualification at any cost.

“We are ready and focused. We will do everything to keep hold of fourth place,” Pasqual said. “Genoa and Roma both lost and it couldn’t have gone any better for us. From now on it is down to us.” (Source: Datasport)

Fiorentina manager Cesare Prandelli looks to field a similar side to the one that took care of Roma last week. Alberto Gilardino leads the 4-2-3-1 formation, while Adrian Mutu and Mario Santana are sidelined with injury. Marco Donadel and Felipe Melo are serving suspensions. Giancarlo Camolese, looking to win at all costs, could experiment with a new 3-5-2 system. The loan goal scorer from a week ago, Rolando Bianchi, will be paired with either Alessandro Rosini or Roberto Stellone. They will be without the injured Elvis Abbruscato, Eugenio Corini, Marco Di Loreto, Marco Pisano, and Paolo Zanetti.

Prediction: Fiorentina 2-0 Torino
Torino hasn’t showed up away from home and it will be too difficult of a task to match up with an in-form Viola side. Cesare Prandelli’s men have won four of their last five.

Fiorentina (4-2-3-1): Frey; Comotto, Dainelli. Gamberini, Pasqual; Kuzmanovic, Montolivo; Semioli, Jovetic, Vargas; Gilardino
Torino (3-5-2): Sereni; Rivalta, Natali, Franceschini; Colombo, Barone, Dzemali, Saumel, Rubin; Bianchi, Rosina

Juventus-Lecce
Location: Stadio Olimpico (Turin)

There is plenty on the line in another matchup that pits two teams at opposite ends of the table. Juventus have been slipping in recent weeks and the heat is on head coach Claudio Ranieri as the Old Lady saw Milan move past them in the standings. Juventus are without a win in their last four matches, including their most recent slip-up in a 2-2 draw with strugglers Reggina. The Bianconeri were recently eliminated from the Coppa Italia and are at risk of missing out on 2nd place, although they have almost ensured a top 4 finish at the least.

Lecce makes the trip up north after a vital 2-1 win against fellow southerners Catania, the first win for head coach Gigi Di Canio. The Salentini were promoted to the top flight this season, but are risking the drop right back down to Serie B. The recent win put the Puglian minnows just three points away from Torino and the safety zone, but Juventus is one of the last teams anyone wants to be facing in the circumstances.

This match was going to be played behind closed doors after Juventus supporters were accused of hurling racist remarks at Inter youngster Mario Balotelli, but the decision was recently changed. Court rulings today confirmed that the stadium ban will be suspended until a new hearing is held on May 15.

Juventus must deal with many key absences against Lecce, including Giorgio Chiellini, Claudio Marchisio, Christian Molinaro, Hasan Salihamidzic and Momo Sissoko. Lecce will miss Angelo, Vitorino Antunes, Daniele Cacia and Senegalese loaner Papa Waigo.

Prediction: Juventus 3-0 Lecce
Crisis averted. Juventus will rebound from their winless streak with the support of their home fans.

Juventus (4-4-2): Buffon; Grygera, Mellberg, Legrottaglie, Molinaro; Camoranesi, Poulsen, Zanetti, Nedved; Iaquinta, Del Piero
Lecce (4-4-1-1): Benussi; Polenghi, Fabiano, Esposito, Giulatto; Munari, Zanchetta, Edinho, Ariatti; Giacomazzi; Tribocchi

Palermo-Cagliari
Location: Stadio Renzo Barbera (Palermo)

It’s a battle of the islands when Palermo meet Cagliari at the Renzo Barbera in what will be a crucial result in the race for UEFA Cup qualification. Both teams have been enjoying a decent run of results and are dead even in 7th place with 49 points apiece. Neither side won last week, but Cagliari gained a point with their draw against Sampdoria. The Rosanero were defeated 1-0 by the Isolani when the two met earlier in the season.

Palermo midfielder Fabio Liverani has urged that fans of the pink-clad side come out in full force this weekend.

“For us this is the game of the year, we need the fans support at this moment and we would like the Barbera full of people,” Liverani said. “Cagliari are one of the revelations of the season. We both want to enter Europe and we will sacrifice ourselves to reach that goal.” (Source: Gazzetta dello Sport)

Cagliari have proven their critics wrong all season. A team that was pinned as a favorite to drop down to Serie B has been inspired by head coach Max Allegri. The tactician has been tipped as a successor to Carlo Ancelotti at Milan due to his excellent results with the Sardinian outfit. He will make the trip to Palermo with minimal absences, but regular starters Davide Biondini and Andrea Cossu having recently been ruled out by injury could be critical. Diego Lopez has one more match left in his suspension. Palermo are without Mark Bresciano and suspended defender Cesare Bovo.

Prediction: Palermo 2-2 Cagliari
Less pressure on Cagliari, but the tension of the match will ultimately lead to both teams cancelling each other out. A tough battle ends in a draw.

Palermo (4-3-1-2): Amelia; Cassani, Kjaer, Savini, Balzaretti; Migliaccio, Liverani, Nocerino; Simplicio; Cavani, Miccoli
Cagliari (4-3-1-2): Marchetti; Pisano, Bianco, Canini, Agostini; Fini, Conti, Parola; Lazzari; Acquafresca, Jeda

Roma-Chievo
Location: Stadio Olimpico (Rome)

After suffering a 4-1 defeat last week at the hands of Fiorentina, Roma are hoping to salvage their damaged season against a Chievo side that is looking to wrap up Serie A salvation. The Giallorossi have been less than impressive in their recent performances. They failed to gain any points on Genoa, who lost this past weekend, and have only managed to win two of their last eight. These two wins came against the likes of Lecce and Bologna, two of Serie A’s relegation strugglers. This puts the odds in favor of Roma to pick up a win against Chievo, but expect them to put up a fight.

Chievo have not yet achieved safety, standing only five points above the relegation zone, but a couple more wins could see them reach safety in a season that looked grim for the Flying Donkeys in recent weeks. The northerners have dramatically turned their season around after putting together some decent results, including wins over Siena and Palermo, as well as a 3-3 draw against Juventus. Chievo lost to Roma 1-0 when the two met earlier this season.

Roma are dealing with injuries to Alberto Aquilani, Cicinho, Alexander Doni, Juan, and Vincenzo Montella. New reports indicate that Brazilian goalkeeper Doni could be out up to three months with his knee injury. David Pizzaro sits out due to disciplinary reasons. Chievo have a couple suspensions in Antonio Langella and Mario Yepes. Their injured list consists of Brazilian midfielder Kerlon, Nigerian striker Stephen Makinwa, Fabio Moro, and Francesco Scardina. The Gialloblu are lead by striker Sergio Pellissier who leads the team with 12 goals, including 8 in his last 5 appearences. As he goes, Chievo goes.

Prediction: Roma 3-2 Chievo
Roma will end their struggles against a less talented Chievo side. But expect a close one.

Roma (4-2-3-1): Artur; Motta, Mexes, Panucci, Riise; De Rossi. Brighi; Taddei, Perrotta, Baptista; Totti
Chievo (4-3-1-2): Sorrentino; Frey, Morero, Mandelli, Mantovani; Luciano, Rigoni, Marcolini; Pinzi; Pellissier, Bogdani

Siena-Napoli
Location: Stadio Artemio Franchi (Siena)

Head coach Roberto Donadoni lead Napoli to their first win under his short tenure last week against league leaders Inter. The Azzurri will try to repeat the task as they travel north to Tuscany against a Siena team that is ever so close to Serie A salvation. The Tuscans stand at 37 points after missing out on great opportunity to earn points against strugglers Torino. A win here would undoubtedly sure up another season in the top flight, but they must be careful not to slip up with Chievo and Torino breathing down their neck.

“We must keep the concentration high and start again from the next match against Napoli,” said Siena defender Lorenzo Del Prete. “I find myself well at Siena, I hope to be able to continue like this.” (Source: Sky)

Napoli are a long shot at European qualification after failing to win in a four month stretch, leaving Donadoni with nothing left but to hope his club can stay motivated and keep him on the bench for next year. Napoli will enter the match with confidence after defeating Siena 2-0 when the two last met, but could struggle in attack due to several important injuries.

German Denis was set to start alongside Week 33 goal scoring hero Marcelo Zalayeta, but the Argentine picked up a muscular injury in training and will join forward Ezequiel Lavezzi on the injury table for the trip to Siena. This paves the way for Brazilian Inacio Pio to start alongside Zalayeta in the usual 3-5-2 formation. Napoli are also without first choice keeper Gennaro Iezzo, as well as Walter Gargano and Christian Maggio. Siena could see the return of star forward Massimo Maccarone from the bench, but will be without Gianluca Curci and talented Columbian stopper Juan Zuniga.

Prediction: Siena 1-0 Napoli
Napoli are lacking fire power, while Siena will be eager to achieve safety in front of their home fans. Siena has plenty of veteran help from the bench if needed, including Maccarone and Nicola Amoruso.

Siena (4-3-1-2): Elefhteropolous; Del Prete, Portanova, Brandao, Del Grosso; Vergassola, Codrea, Galloppa; Kharja; Ghezzal, Calaio
Napoli (3-5-2): Navarro; Santacroce, Cannavaro, Contini; Montervino; Blasi, Amodio, Hamsik, Mannini; Zalayeta, Pia

Udinese-Atalanta
Location: Stadio Friuli (Udine)

It’s a mid-table tussle at the Stadio Friuli when Udinese host Atalanta this Sunday. Little will be at stake between these two sides after both picked up insurance wins last week. Standing at 45 and 44 points respectively, Udinese and Atalanta would probably have to win out to come close to European qualification and both are already guaranteed a spot in Serie A next year.

Udinese will be sticking with their usual 4-3-3 tactical approach, with highly sought-after striker Fabio Quagliarella leading the trident attack with teammates Antonio Floro Flores and Simone Pepe on either side. Captain Antonio Di Natale remains out with an injury. Former Atalanta man Fernando Tissone and Andrea Coda are also out for the Zebrette.

Gigi Del Neri will stick with a more defensive-minded 4-4-1-1 system. Atalanta also hold a wanted man in Sergio Floccari, who will play at the tip of the formation with Cristiano Doni in his support. The Nerazzurri injury list contains Brazilian Ferreira Pinto and first-choice keeper Ferdinando Coppola.

Prediction: Udinese 2-0 Atalanta
Nothing exciting about this match, just something for the home fans to be happy about.

Udinese (4-3-3): Handanovic; Isla, Zapata, Felipe, Pasquale; Inler, D’Agostino, Asamoah; Pepe, Quagliarella, Floro Flores
Atalanta (4-4-1-1): Consigli; Capelli, Talamonti, Manfredini, Bellini; Defendi, Guarente, Cigarini, Padoin; Doni; Floccari

Genoa-Sampdoria (Sunday, 2:30 ET)
Location: Stadio Luigi Ferraris (Genoa)

The Derby della Lanterna caps off this week’s round of matches. Genoa have lost two in a row and are fading after a strong start to the season. The Grifoni had Champions League qualification in their grasp, but let it slip away last week after the surprise 2-0 defeat at the hands of relegation strugglers Bologna.

Sampdoria, on the other hand, stand in the middle of the pack and have little left to play for in Serie A. The Blucerchiati were slow coming out of the gate, but have turned their season around thanks to the January signing of Giampaolo Pazzini and his parternship with Antonio Cassano. Sampdoria have made it to the Coppa Italia final and rumors surrounding the future of head coach Walter Mazzarri are being passed around. Mazzarri is said to be next in line should the position at Lazio open up.

Genoa boss Gian Piero Gasperini is looking forward to the derby and has stated he is satisfied no matter what happens from here on out.

“The objective at the beginning of the season was to finish in the top half of the championship and we’ve done that with five matches remaining,” Gasperini said at a recent press conference.

Gasperini will likely field his high-flying 3-4-3 attacking formation, while Mazzarri will counter with his similar 3 back system. There are no major injury concerns to the starting formations of either side and no one is disqualified.

Prediction: Genoa 4-2 Sampdoria
More at stake for Genoa, little for Sampdoria. Samp will be looking ahead to their Coppa final, but we still will see plenty of offense in this one.

Genoa (3-4-3): Rubinho; Biava, Ferrari, Bocchetti; Rosi, Thiago Motta, Juric, Criscito; Palladino, Milito, Sculli
Sampdoria (3-5-2): Castellazzi; Campagnaro, Gastaldello, Lucchini; Stankevicius, Samarco, Palombo, Franceschini, Pieri; Pazzini, Cassano

Chievo Verona v. Udinese Calcio
Final : 1-2

(Verona) Matchday 33

D’Agostino (U) rig. 35, 93, Pellissier (CV) 71, sent off Langella (CV) 94

Chievo:
Squizzi; Frey, Morero, Yepes, Mantovani; Rigoni, Italiano (Luciano 55), Marcolini (Langella 78); Pinzi (Colucci 83); Pellissier, Bogdani
Udinese:
Handanovic; Isla (Domizzi 79), Zapata, Felipe, Pasquale (Obodo 90); Inler, D’Agostino, Asamoah; Pepe (Lukovic 60), Quagliarella, Sanchez

Chievo looked to earn a truly vital home point with a draw versus the Zebrette before Gaetano D’Agostino sealed the 3 points for Udinese in stoppages.
3 points or even a draw would most likely have secured the Flying Donkeys safety to remain in Serie A for next year, but Domenico Di Carlo should take heart from today’s performance. Udinese began with a trident of Pepe, Quagliarella, and the young Chilean Sanchez up front and the three began to combine early on. Pepe wasted a free kick opportunity in the 6th minute however the bianconeri continued to harass the Chievo defense during the first half hour. Only Marcolini’s swerving free kick tested Handanovic’s goalmouth and he parried away for his defense to clear. Mario Yepes was to be the proverbial donkey as he recklessly tackled down Quagliarella in the 18 yr box in the 34th minute. Referee Celi immediately pointed to the spot, and up stepped D’Agostino to wrong the keeper and slot the ball in the bottom right corner. A goal line scramble and Yepes clearance 3 minutes later just kept the scoreline at 1-0. The exciting youngster Alexis Sanchez dazzled with stepovers in the box just before halftime but only could finish in the side netting.

Chievo came out pressuring in the second half, and on 71 minutes found the equalizer through none other than attacante, Sergio Pellissier. Heading past Handanovic from close range, the striker did not waste Rigoni’s cross and tied things up at 1-1. Though only his second goal in Verona, he has been in rich form, this being his 12th goal of the campaign. Handanovic would earn his pay as he made save after save while Chievo rode a wave of momentum after their equalizer. Chievo did not look to be satisfied with a point, and continued to press late on with Pasquale Marino’s men sitting back on the counter. But it was the midfield stalwart, D’Agostino who popped up at the death to steal all 3 points for Udinese. Juventus transfer target Quagliarella provided the service and D’Ago headed past Squizzi from close range and the 2-1 scoreline would remain until the final whistle. Only substitute Antonio Langella’s foolish high footed challenge on Sanchez was left, with the former Cagliari man being sent off in the 94th minute.
Who said Udinese lack leadership without Toto Di Natale available? Certainly not D’Agostino who easily was Man of the Match with Mario Yepes of Chievo the flop of the contest.

Fiorentina v. AS Roma
Final: 4-1
Stadi Artemio Franchi (Firenze) Matchday 33

Vargas (F) 6, Gilardino (F) 47, 67, Gobbi (F) 73, Baptista (R) 86, sent off Pizarro (R) 59

Fiorentina:
Frey; Comotto, Gamberini, Dainelli, Pasqual; Donadel, Montolivo; Semioli, Jovetic (Gobbi 72), Vargas (Kuzmanovic 52); Gilardino (Bonazzoli 80)
AS Roma:
Artur; Motta, Panucci, Riise, Cassetti (Tonetto 80); De Rossi, Pizarro; Brighi, Taddei (D’Alessandro 63), Baptista; Totti

Another utterly terrible defensive display from the giallorossi sees them concede 4 goals yet again, and all but dismisses any hope of the 4th place coveted Champions League spot.
With both club’s seasons on the line, tension was in the Firenze air as both teams took to the field. It became quite clear within the first few minutes what kind of match it would be as Pasquale cynically kicked Motta straight to the ground. The Viola tifosi would not have to wait long however to see them in front, as Motta allowed Juan Vargas to turn from 30 yards out, and Vargas let a screamer go that left Artur with no chance. Roma would react however, and began to see more of the ball and Baptista’s free kick sailed just over the bar. Make shift centerback, Marco Cassetti was lucky to not have conceded a penalty as Gila’s overhead kick clearly came off Cassetti’s arm. Roma would fight back through Panucci’s wide header, and Taddei’s long range effort to Frey’s left. Motta took his turn to shoot wide, and Brighi missed a sitter turning it over the bar. But it would again be Fiorentina who had a penalty shout with the Roman born Daniele De Rossi’s tackle in the box on Seba Jovetic. Luca Banti waved play on, but De Rossi seemed to take much of Jovetic and little of the ball. A sublime flick and pass from captain Francesco Totti released Brighi yet again, but his shot off the outside of the boot with sailing wide of goal. Cassetti would again be in the mix as his body check on Jovetic wasn’t seen and he narrowly escaped a sending off as he was already shown a caution.

Three minutes after the restart, winger Franco Semioli’s pinpoint cross found Gilardino in the box and he easily headed past the Roman custodian Artur. Motta’s defensive blunder almost gifted Gila a second as he found his shot saved 1 v 1 with Artur. Soon after Cassetti found his shot careening off the crossbar after an ensuing Pizarro free kick, but still the score remained 2-0 in favor of the Viola. Pizarro and Semioli allowed the tension to get the better of them, and each was cautioned for a tete a tete on 59 minutes. But the confrontation would prove decisive for Roma as the Chilean playmaker’s temper would end his night as it was his second yellow card. It didn’t take long for Gilardino to out-muscle Cassetti and slot past Artur exploiting the man advantage. Jovetic came off to a standing ovation after harassing the Roman defense, and Massimo Gobbi scored the 4th after barely coming on the pitch. Semioli and Gila combined again and though Artur parried the Italian’s powerful header, he could do nothing about the rebound that Gobbi shot into an open net. Motta’s overhead kick forced Frey into his first true save late on, and Baptista’s solo effort to blast past Frey was Roma’s only consolation.

Luciano Spalletti looked disconsolate as La Magica were forced to realize Fiorentina would fight Genoa for the Champions League final spot. Jovetic the creator, but Gilardino the finisher making the Italian Man of the Match. Pizarro was surely the worst performer with his unnecessary sending off quashing any hopes of a Roman revival.

Chievo-Udinese (Sat, 12:00 ET)
Location: Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentigodi (Verona)

Chievo are enjoying a great run as of late, having lost only once in their last five. The Flying Donkeys are sitting a comfortable 8 points above the relegation zone and a home win against Udinese this Saturday could see them wrap up their goal of Serie A salvation.

“Now the survival is close,” Chievo forward Sergio Pellissier said. “But we must continue like this considering that in our league in the final matchdays there are always games which are difficult to predict.” (Source: Sky)

Udinese have had a disappointing season which could see them fall short of European qualification as they sit in the middle of the table. However, the Zebrette have won two on the trot and can now focus on league matches after their elimination from the UEFA Cup against Werder Bremen.

When these two sides met in Week 14, Chievo came away with a surprising 1-0 victory. Udinese are without captain Antonio Di Natale, but will still have plenty of firepower as they field their usual 4-3-3 formation. Fabio Quagliarella, a Juventus summer target, leads the Udinese attack along with wingers Simone Pepe and Alexis Sanchez. Andrea Coda and Fernando Tissone join Di Natale on the injury table.

Chievo will be without Nigerian hitman Stephen Makinwa, Kerlon, Fabio Moro, Francesco Scardina, and goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino.

Prediction: Chievo 2-2 Udinese
Chievo have a lot more to play for and will be in front of their home fans, but Udinese are still one of the toughest teams to contain. Expect a see-saw affair with a draw being the final result.

Chievo (4-3-1-2): Squizzi; Sardo, Morero, Yepes, Mantovani; Luciano, Rigoni, Marcolini; Pinzi; Pellissier, Bogdani
Udinese (4-3-3): Handanovic; Isla, Zapata, Felipe, Lukovic; Inler, D’Agostino, Asamoah; Pepe, Qualiarella, Sanchez

Fiorentina-Roma (Sat, 2:30 ET)
Location: Stadi Artemio Franchi (Firenze)

Roma’s Champions League hopes are on the line when they travel to Florence in what lines up to be a thrilling encounter. After the controversial 3-2 victory over Lecce, Roma find themselves only five points adrift of fourth place and three points from Fiorentina. The Giallorossi have had a disappointing season riddled with inconsistent results, but they will feel that there is still some hope for a positive finish to this season.

The Viola are also hoping a win here can boost their chances to qualify for the Champions League. The hosts had a difficult loss on Sunday against Udinese, but are still in good shape as they trail 4th place Genoa by only two points. Because Genoa has a rather easy game against Bologna, failing to pick up three points in this one could be heartbreaking for either side.

Roma will be lead by captain Francesco Totti, fresh off his brace against Lecce. The Giallorossi defense has been a weakness as of late, conceding 13 goals in the last 5 games. It will be of no comfort knowing that Cincinho and Juan are sidelined with injuries while defenseman is Philippe Mexes already sitting out with a suspension. Alberto Aquilani is still sidelined and Jeremy Menez also adds to the injury woes.

For Fiorentina, Felipe Melo remains suspended after his incident with Diego Lopez of Cagliari. In addition, the Viola are still without their star forward Adrian Mutu, who could return as soon as next month following recent surgery on his knee.

Prediction: Fiorentina 3-2 Roma
This one can go other either way and both sides will be really desperate for the win. One thing you can count on is exciting television.

Fiorentina (4-4-2): Frey; Comotto, Danielli, Gamberini, Pasqual; Semilo, Montolivo, Donadel, Kuzmanovic; Gilardino, Jovetic
Roma (4-2-3-1): Arur; Motta, Riise, Panucci, Tonetto; Pizzaro, De Rosi; Taddei, Brighi, Baptista; Totti

Bologna-Genoa
Location: Stadio Renato Dall’Ara (Bologna)

Two teams on opposite ends of the table will face each other for completely different reasons. Bologna have lost five in a row and are quickly plummeting back towards Serie B. The Rossoblu are one point away from safety but have been one of the least impressive teams as of late. Former Siena and Lecce boss Giuseppe Papadopulo was brought in this month to replace the sacked Sinisa Mihajlovic, but is yet to find any success with his new club after a 4-1 defeat to Palermo last week.

Genoa, on the other hand, are exceeding expectations and they find themselves right in the middle of the hunt for a Champions League spot. The Grifone had won four in a row, but slipped up at home last week against Lazio. They were fortunate that other results went their way and they still remain in the coveted 4th place spot, just two points above Fiorentina.

Genoa should feel very confident heading into this match against a weakened Bologna team. However, when these two sides met earlier in the season, the result was a 1-1 draw. Grifone Midfielder Omar Milanetto is wary of the threat they could face against Bologna.

“They are a team with high potential in attack, but, like the standings say, with some problems,” Milanetto said. “It’s up to us to try and find out any weaknesses and wait for the right moment to hit them.” (Source: Il Secolo XIX)

Bologna are facing an injury crisis, with the likes of Francesco Antonioli, Cesar Aparecido, Davide Bombardini, Miguel Britos, Marcello Castellini, Luigi Lavecchia and Gabrielle Paonessa all out. Genoa will be relieved to not have any major injury concerns, as talisman Diego Milito returns from an injury. Milito has scored 16 goals so far this term.

Prediction: Bologna 0-3 Genoa
Bologna will be desperate and might do anything it takes to win, but they just have too many players sidelined with injuries. Genoa have a high-potent attack and will run the Rossoblu ragged on Sunday.

Bologna (4-5-1): Colombo; Zenoni, Terzi, Moras, Lanna; Valiani, Mudingayi, Mutarelli, Mingazzini, Rodriguez; Di Vaio
Genoa (3-4-3): Rubinho; Biava, Ferrari, Bocchetti; Rossi, Thiago Motta, Juric, Criscito; Palladino, Milito, Sculli

Lazio-Atalanta
Location: Stadio Olimpico (Roma)

Lazio have won two in a row after struggling with three straight defeats. The Biancocelesti still have an outside shot at European qualification, and are definitely on the upside compared to mid-table Atalanta. The Orobici have obtained the 40 points, the magic number for safety, but have been unimpressive in recent weeks and are without a win in their last four. Atalanta fell to Reggina at home last week and criticisms surrounding the club have led coach Gigi Del Neri to announce he will not be returning to the bench next year.

“We’re sorry about the result,” Atalanta defender Gianpaolo Bellini said. “Because for 80 minutes we tried, but in football episodes make the difference and this time they did not come our way.” (Source: Sky)

Lazio fell to Atalanta 2-0 when the two met earlier this season, but will still be the more confident side entering this match. The Eternal City club are lead by striker Mauro Zarate who has netted 12 goals thus far in the season. The 22-year-old Argentine is on the radar of Liverpool, but it is looking more likely that he will sign a contract in the summer which will keep him with Lazio. Atalanta has a star themselves in Sergio Floccari, also with 12 goals to his name. Floccari has been linked with several of the top clubs in Italy, but recent developments suggest he is very close to signing a deal with Genoa.

The attack of Lazio will be weakened with the injury-absence of Gordan Pandev. They will also be without Brazilian midfielder Matuzalem, Christian Manfredini and Simone Inzaghi. The visitors will make the trip without Ferreira Pinto, Alessio Cerci, Gianvito Plasmati and goalkeeper Ferdinando Coppola.

Prediction: Lazio 2-1 Atalanta
These are two teams headed in opposite directions. Atalanta seem comfortable having achieved safety and probably won’t take home any points from Rome.

Lazio (4-4-2): Muslera; De Silverstri, Siviglia, Rozenhal, Kolarov; Lichsteiner, Ledesma, Dabo, Brocchi; Zarate, Rocchi
Atalanta (4-4-1-1): Consigli; Garics, Talamonti, Manfredini, Bellini; Valdes, Guarente, Cigarini, Padoin; Doni; Floccari

Lecce-Catania
Location: Stadio Via del Mare (Lecce)

Lecce has not won in their last ten Serie A games and survival is looking grim for the southern minnows. Head coach Mario Beretta was sacked last month and his replacement, Gigi De Canio, has done little to boost their chances. The tactician was furious after the 3-2 defeat against Roma last week, blaming the loss on a controversial penalty that was given.

Catania have been having a decent season, but now have very little to play for having reached 40 points. Catania defender Cristian Silvestri claims the season has been a success.

“I think that this was a fantastic season for Catania,” Silvestri said. “Obviously we left some points behind us and made some mistakes which we could have avoided, but for the rest we are satisfied.” (Source: Sky)

Despite the successful season, the Elefanti have been rather weak on their travels, only picking up one victory. This statistic could be a major boost for a Lecce side that will be doing everything they can to win this one. The Giallorossi have one of the worst scoring totals in Serie A, as well as the second worst defense. This could be the match that can turn their fortunes around.

Lecce will be without Luca Ariatti, Antunes, Angelo, Fabio Caserta, and Daniele Cacia. The only major absence for Catania is striker Giuseppe Mascara, who leads the team with 10 goals. It will be an interesting match for the visitors as several new faces will be seen in the starting lineup. U-21 Czech goalkeeper Thomas Kosicky will be one of the changes for the Rossazzurri.

Prediction: Lecce 1-0 Catania
Do or die for Lecce. They are long overdue for a victory and it could finally come against an experimenting Catania side.

Lecce (4-3-1-2): Benussi; Polengi, Fabiano, Esposito, Giuliatto; Munari, Zanchetta, Edinho; Giacomazzi; Tribocchi, Castillo
Catania (4-1-4-1): Kosicky; Potenza, Silvestre, Stovini, Llama; Carboni; Martinez, Baiocco, Biagianti, Tedesco; Morimoto

Milan-Palermo
Location: San Siro (Milan)

Milan have been in sparkling form and although it’s too little too late for their Scudetto dreams, Champions League qualification is almost in their grasp. The Rossoneri find themselves in a battle with Juventus for second place after crushing Torino 5-1 last week. However, haunting memories of a 3-1 loss to Palermo will be stuck in their minds as the Sicilians travel up north to do battle this time around.

Palermo are in the midst of European qualification themselves, albeit the UEFA Cup. The Rosanero have fared well against the giants of Serie A this year, but their confidence might be shot after news that defender Moris Carrozzzieri has tested positive for cocaine and could face a multi-year ban. Good news for Palermo fans is that defender Simon Kjaer will be sticking around for another year. The Danish starlet has been in great form for Palermo and has attracted the attention of several top clubs.

Milan will be confident after their recent 12-1 thrashing over the Hungarian League Team in a friendly. They have a laundry list of injuries that includes Daniele, Bonera, Marco Borriello, Gennaro Gattuso, Kahka Kaladze and Alessandro Nesta, just to name a few. However, the Diavolo still have plenty of depth. Clarence Seedorf, Mathieu Flamini and Ronaldinho will all be available from the bench. The attacking trident of Milan will once again feature Super Pippo Inzaghi, fresh off of a hat trick against Toro, alongside Pato with Kaka in a supporting role.

Palermo have little to worry about in terms of absences. The only player unfit for the trip is backup striker Igor Budan. Talented Brazilian trequarista Fabio Simplicio will return from suspension for the men in pink.

Prediction: Milan 3-1 Palermo
Milan are flying high and it is unlikely that any team could go into the San Siro and trip them up at this point.

Milan (4-3-1-2): Dida, Zambrotta, Senderos, Maldini, Jankulovski; Beckham, Pirlo, Ambrosini; Kaka; Inzaghi, Pato
Palermo (4-3-1-2): Amelia; Cassani, Bovo, Kjaer, Balzaretti; Tedesco, Liverani, Migliaccio; Simplicio; Cavani, Miccoli

Reggina-Juventus
Location: Stadio Oreste Granillo (Reggio Calabria)

Boosted by their 1-0 road win at Atalanta, Reggina host Juventus in what will be a critical contest to determine their Serie A future. The Amaranto are no strangers to incredible survival stories, but their struggles have left them with very little hope of staying in the top flight. Only four points away from safety, the southern minnows will likely need to take all three points on Sunday and hope that other results go their way.

Three points will not be an easy task for Reggina, as they welcome third place Juventus to the Granillo. The Old Lady’s recent struggles have left them without a win in their last three league appearences. Questions have been raised about the job security of head coach Claudio Ranieri, despite a campaign in which the Bianconeri will likely obtain at least a Champions League qualifying spot. Although an official statement was released by Juventus which claimed that Ranieri is safe, he has to like his chances to silence his critics against Serie A’s bottom club.

Injuries and suspensions are an issue for both sides. Reggina are without the injured Alessio Sestu and Chilean international Carlos Carmona. The home side will also be dealing with the suspensions of Maurizio Lanzaro, Andrea Costa, and Edgar Barreto. For Juventus, the midfield is weakened with the suspension of Tiago and the injuries to Momo Sissoko and Cristiano Zanetti. Reggina hitman Bernardo Corradi should be fit to return, but coach Nevio Orlandi could leave him on the bench in favor of an extra midfielder.

Prediction: Reggina 1-1 Juventus
It’s tough for visitors to take three points in Calabria. The Amaranto will be giving it their all against a slumping Juventus side and could force at least a draw here.

Reggina (3-4-2-1): Puggioni; Cirillo, Valdez, Santos; Vigiani, Carmona, Hallfredsson, Barilla; Brienza, Ceravolo; Corradi
Juventus (4-4-2): Buffon; Grygera, Legrottaglie, Mellberg, Molinaro; Camoranesi, Poulsen, Marcisio, Nedved; Iaquinta, Del Piero

Sampdoria-Cagliari
Location: Stadio Luigi Ferraris (Genoa)

Fresh off of their Coppa Italia success against Inter, Sampdoria host high flying Cagliari in a game which could see the visitors boost their hopes of European qualification. Sampdoria has all but locked up Serie A safety and has little left to play for this season. However, with their Coppa victory on Thursday, the Ligurian outfit earned a ticket to face Lazio in the final.

Cagliari has plenty to play for in this one and still has their sights set on Europe. Having far exceeded pre-season expectations, the Isolani are only one point away from 7th place Palermo and a UEFA Cup spot. Head coach Max Allegri is using this goal as motivation the rest of the year. Rossoblu midfielder Daniele Conti also has high hopes for Europe and believes his opponents midweek cup tie puts his team at an advantage.

“A tired Sampdoria side? Could be, because they play tonight [Thursday] and face Inter, not just any team,” Conti said. (Source: Sportmediaset.it)

There may be minor distractions on both benches, as Allegri and Sampdoria coach Walter Mazzarri have been recently named as replacements for high profile positions. Allgeri has been linked as a successor to Carlo Ancelotti at Milan, while Mazzarri was recently given permission to take the Lazio job at the end of the season. Mazzarri joined Sampdoria two seasons ago after his miraculous escape from relegation at the helm of Reggina with an -11 point penalty.

The Blucerchiati will have most of their important pieces on hand for this contest, with the exception of Claudio Bellucci who is out with an injury. The same can be said for Cagliari, whose only important absence is Diego Lopez. The Argentine is still sitting out with a ban after his row with Felipe Melo two weeks ago.

Prediction: Sampdoria 2-2 Cagliari
Cagliari indeed have more to play for, but don’t expect Sampdoria to play without a fight in front of their home fans. The striking partnership between Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini will find a way to keep Sampdoria in this game.

Sampdoria (3-5-2): Castellazzi; Campagnaro, Gastadello, Lucchini; Padalino, Sammarco, Palombo, Franceschini, Pieri; Pazzini, Cassano
Cagliari (4-3-1-2): Lupatelli; Pisano, Astori, Canini, Agostini; Fini, Conti, Biondini; Cossu; Acquafresca, Jeda

Torino-Siena
Location: Stadio Olimpico (Torino)

One point is all that separates Torino from the drop zone as they host Siena in a must win contest. The hosts will look to put their embarrassing 5-1 loss to Milan behind them. Toro coach Giancarlo Camolese is trying to look at things in a positive light by hoping his players can learn from their mistakes last week.

“I showed the players the first thirty minutes of the game because during that period we see the positive and negative things which then led to the final result,” Camolese said. (Source: Sportmediaset.it)

The Granata will field a defensive 4-4-1-1 formation with defender Ivan Franceschini, the lone goal scorer against Milan, making another start. Franceschini had been left out the squad practically all season, but will be making his fourth appearance after getting in the good graces of Camolese. Rolando Bianchi is set to play as the lone striker.

The visitors are in good position after earning two straight wins before they fell to Chievo last week. The Tuscan side is practically safe from relegation, but a win against Torino would give them 40 points which is usually the magic number to achieve safety.

Torino has a plethora of injuries to deal with, including Elvis Abbruscato, Eugenio Corini and Marco Di Loreto. Siena will be weakened in attack with the absence of Massimo Maccarone (out for the year) and the suspension of Nicola Amoruso, who made the move to Siena in January after he struggled to settle in with Torino.

Prediction: Torino 0-1 Siena
These two teams don’t exactly have the most prolific attacks in Serie A. Tension will be high for Torino and they may be vulnerable against a more comfortable Siena side.

Torino (4-4-1-1): Sereni; Rivalta, Natali, Franceschini, Rubin; Abate, Barone, Dzemali, Diana; Gasbarroni; Bianchi
Siena (4-3-1-2): Elefhteropolous; Zuniga, Portanova, Brandao, Del Grosso; Vergassola, Codrea, Galloppa; Kharja; Ghezzal, Calaio

Napoli-Inter (Sun, 2:30 ET)
Location: Stadio San Paolo (Napoli)

Serie A leaders Inter are cruising toward yet another Scudetto with just weeks remaining in the season. Despite draws in their last two games, the Nerazzurri have only lost twice all year and maintain a comfortable ten point advantage over their city rivals.

Napoli under head coach Roberto Donadoni are yet to find a win and the patience of president De Laurentiis could already be growing shorter for the former Azzurri boss. Donadoni’s predecessor, Edy Reja, has stated he is open to a return to his former club if the door were ever to be opened again. Playing Serie A’s top club isn’t the dream situation for Donadoni to get his first win, but his side could take advantage of Inter’s mediocre form. The Nerazzurri were eliminated from the Coppa Italia on Thursday with a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Sampdoria.

In the previous meeting between the two sides, Inter came out on top by a score of 2-1. The visitors only have a few injury concerns, including Douglas Maicon and Amantino Mancini. The drama revolving around Brazilian striker Adriano has still not been resolved. After the 27-year-old went AWOL after international duty, Inter are hoping to terminate his contract and free up millions for the transfer market.

Napoli’s injury list is more a worry with Walter Gargano, Christian Maggio, Lenadro Rinaudo and goalkeepers Gennaro Iezzo and Nicolas Navarro all out. Pablo Cannvaro will be serving a one-match suspension.

Prediction: Napoli 2-3 Inter
Despite the recent slump, Inter are still dominant and should regain their form against a Napoli team who are dealing with their own struggles. Expect a high scoring affair that could ultimately go either way.

Napoli (3-5-2): Bucci; Santacroce, Contini, Aronica; Mannini, Blasi, Pazienza, Hamsik, Vitaqle; Zalayeta, Lavezzi
Inter (4-3-1-2): Julio Cesar; Santon, Cordoba, Smuel, Chivu; Zanetti, Cambiasso, Muntari; Stankovic; Cruz, Ibrahimovic

“France is beautiful, but I prefer Florence”, he said jokingly.

“Now more than ever, all thoughts are for this final stage of the season and the challenge on Saturday with Roma”.

“We come ready and loaded, with a great desire to redeem the defeat in Udine. That loss was only an episode and we are all aware of our resources and are convinced that the game (against Roma) will end up in victory”.

Injury plagued Azzurri midfielder Alberto Aquilani is headed to the Netherlands for treatment on his right ankle. The medical consultation will be carried out by Professor Van Dijk in Amsterdam.

Meanwhile, Brazilian defender Juan, who was in the final stages of a rehabiliation program for a previous injury, was diagnosed today with a new thigh injury.

“The footballer Juan, submitted today in the afternoon for testing, showed a small discontinuity of the fibers of the superficial femoral biceps. In the coming days, we will re-evaluate his condition”, read an official statement made by the Roma medical staff.

In other news, AC Milan received a huge boost today as their Italian midfielder, Gennaro Gattuso, returned to training with his teammates. Rino tore his cruciate ligament in a hard fought victory against Catania in Decemeber and had to undergo surgery.
